The Vampire Diaries Review: “The Day I Tried To Live” (Season 6, Episode 13)

Even though The Vampire Diaries slowed things way down tonight, there was still that sense of urgency and pending doom that makes the show so enjoyable to watch season after season. With tragedy looming around every corner- past, present, and future - the characters took a much needed time out to celebrate the birthday of their temporarily departed friend, Bonnie (Kat Graham).

All things considered, Liv (Penelope Mitchell) going off the handle tonight wasn’t really all that unpredictable – but still really fun to watch. Besides the obvious chance of potentially screwing up Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) chances of rescuing Bonnie from herself, she deserved to get that out of her system. It went right along with her character, and frankly, who hasn’t wanted to see Kai get his butt kicked all season? You can be honest – I know I did.

The only part about this entire sneak attack that was uncalled for was Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) reaction. It’s understandable that he would be hurt, and even offended, that Liv put a magical kaput on him playing the role of knight in shining armor, but to react so harshly was uncalled for at best. I get it that he isn’t a fan of liars, but hello, look around: Tyler is living a lie. Last season he was a vampire-werewolf hybrid and now he’s masquerading as a regular human. Him and his friends survive by lying to just about everyone around them. Plus, he’s only been dating Liv for like five minutes.

At least when Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) fight, they have the history to back it up. And, subsequently get over it – tonight being a perfect example. It’s not just one of them being overly sensitive at the first red flag to pop up. Granted, Liv comes with an excessive number of red flags, but most of which have been out of her control. Their entire relationship evolved at a record speed and now that they have left the honeymoon phase, Tyler is over it? The writers didn’t exactly give him a smooth exit strategy, either. After everything that he’s been through, it would have been nice to see him follow up his protective phase with an understanding one.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) may be ready to excuse Kai for his sins if it gets them Bonnie back, but that doesn’t mean fans should roll out the welcome mat just yet. There’s still plenty of episodes left on this season of The Vampire Diaries for the Kai we know and hate to return. Until then, let’s enjoy the fact that no one we like died or seems to be in imminent danger (Bonnie’s self imposed danger excluded) at the moment.
