The Vampire Diaries Review: “Yellow Ledbetter” (Season 6, Episode 2)

The Vampire Diaries didn't waste our time with a filler episode to follow-up its emotional comeback last week. Instead, Julie Plec and her team started to unroll the season six storyline one piece at a time. And so far, so awesome.

The writers have revealed a major plot twist on this episode in a very subtle manner. Elena thinks Damon is a monster. Taking away her memories just created more problems than it fixed. Instead of just making him a passing acquaintance, or a stranger, Alaric’s attempt to alter her memories didn’t include softening the horrific ones. In exchange, Elena went from “He was my boyfriend. I loved him. And, now he’s dead,” to “He was Stefan’s brother. He was a monster. And, now he’s dead.” Well, that’s all fine and dandy, except it’s hard to believe that anyone is under the impression that he won’t eventually return – and what then?

Although Alaric makes the claim that he can just reverse whatever it is he just did, it obviously will make for a much more interesting (read: emotionally brutal) reunion if he fails. That’s right fans, expect the worse for when Damon and Bonnie finally break out of 1994. Until then, it looks like those two are going to have their hands full. The eerie version of Mystic Falls that they landed in may not be as deserted as they originally thought. Which is even more creepy than the idea of them being stuck on an endless loop, reliving the same day over and over again. At least Damon can cook (Seriously, Bonnie, who hates pancakes?) and doesn’t mind entertaining us with his rendition of 90’s pop hits.

Tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries didn’t reveal all the answers, but it did point us in the right direction. Bonnie and Damon are stuck in a weird version of hell, but I’d wager that the eclipse has something to do with it (witches and the moon). Elena got her wish, which she’ll probably end of regretting. Caroline tracked down Stefan with some assistance from Enzo (Welcome back!), and it wasn’t the cheerful reunion anyone hoped for. And, things are getting complicated inside the Mystic Falls borders. The town may still be a supernatural free zone, but with a new Fell in town, that doesn’t mean much.

The Vampire Diaries gave fans a healthy dose of everything they could have wanted – flashbacks, messy bits, and the return of Ezo (who we love to hate!). Season six is off to a fantastic start.
