Things are about to get seriously creepy on American Horror Story – even by the show’s own lofty standards.

With little over four weeks to go until the premiere of season 8, FX has rolled out a suitably terrifying first-look teaser for its cult anthology series, which is here to signal the end of days.

There’s an unborn child at the mercy of a heart that’s rotten to the core, before the camera sweeps up to a bird’s-eye view of a city being annihilated by what appears to be some form of nuclear explosion. Cut the moment when two humans (a couple, perhaps?) melt into the ash, before a very familiar hand glides into frame.

All of this is designed to establish the tone and theme of FX’s “Apocalypse,” and the fact that AHS veterans have gone on record about the “insane” eighth season leads us to believe that Ryan Murphy and his team have rustled up something truly special. It is a crossover between “Murder House” and “Coven,” after all, two of the very best installments in the FX anthology series… thus far.

Remember, in what can be seen as a clear show of confidence, FX has already gone ahead and renewed American Horror Story for another two seasons, ensuring we’ll have plenty of spills and TV thrills all the way into 2020.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, there’s an apocalypse on the horizon, and it’ll herald a slew of familiar faces, including Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Joan Collins, Cheyenne Jackson, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman and Adina Porter. As the show’s eighth season is tinged by witchcraft, both Emma Roberts and Taissa Farmiga are expected to return, too, with Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman and Kyle Allen assuming guest roles.

American Horror Story breaks new ground for the cult anthology series on September 12th.
