‘We aren’t quite there yet’: One of streaming’s biggest fantasy shows takes a huge step toward securing what’s been confirmed as its last season

The end is becoming increasingly nigh, but in a good way.

As a whole, fantasy tends to be on a shakier peg than virtually every other genre on streaming, with Netflix the most egregious offenders on that front. However, Prime Video has done a decent job of carrying on its biggest episodic properties, and the chances just increased that Good Omens will continue being one of them.

The second season of the hit Neil Gaiman adaptation picked up pretty much exactly where the first left off by winning enthusiastic responses from critics and audiences alike, while achieving its most important goal of making a massive dent on the platform’s most-watched rankings.

Its creator had already previously confirmed there wouldn’t be a season 4, but what about the third? As Gaiman has noted before, it all comes down to whether or not Amazon is happy with the numbers, and the most recent evidence suggests it is. Per Deadline, the company and co-producer the BBC have picked up the options on the contracts of stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant, an encouraging sign if ever there was one.

Shortly after, the architect behind Good Omens offered his own two cents on Tumblr, with Gaiman echoing the sentiment that an official renewal for season 3 is right around the corner.

“Every day it’s getting closer. We aren’t quite there yet. But Amazon has definitely been doing things that make a third season more likely.”

The downside is that executive producer, regular director, and co-showrunner Douglas Mackinnon won’t be back when the trigger gets pulled, but that’s a minor negative compared to knowing Good Omens is almost certainly going to wrap up on its own terms.
