What is 'Ted Lasso' about?

Will there be a ‘Ted Lasso’ spinoff?

There's already talk of continuing the story for some characters.

The curtains have at long last drawn to a close on the third and seemingly final season of Ted Lasso and it was a pretty good ending. But fans are still hopeful that the story of Richmond AFC will continue in some way. The award-winning show is the golden child of Apple TV original programming, with 795 million minutes viewed in a single week. The comedy-drama follows Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, who goes from coaching American college football to English soccer. His charming and wholesome personality turns out to be just what the team needs to be successful.

For three seasons, Ted Lasso has captivated and warmed the hearts of millions of viewers, but Sudeikis had always planned for a three-season run. Regardless, viewers aren’t ready to say goodbye just yet, but just how likely is it that the series will continue as a spinoff?

What do the show’s creators say?

Brendan Hunt, executive producer, co-creator, and star, spoke with Deadline regarding the future possibilities before the beginning of the third series. Even back then, it was clear that there was a desire to continue the show in some capacity.

“It’s not necessarily the end of the series. It’s just likely the end of this story because we always saw it as a three-part thing, […] We never even knew for sure we’d be able to tell all three parts — and suddenly, here we are. So, there will be some type of closure to this beat but closure is not necessarily the end.”

It’s clear that the producers have been preparing for the end of the series for a while, though even if they know what’s coming next, they haven’t given much away.

What other characters could have spin-offs?

Could we see any spinoffs focusing on the footballers and other characters? Could we get a show that follows someone like Nate? While speaking with Sky News, Nick Mohammed, who plays Nathan Shelley, spoke about the possibilities.

“I get nervous about the idea of a spin-off, especially because Ted Lasso has been such a hit, and everyone is so grateful for that. There’s always a danger with spin-offs, right? Not quite hitting the right note, but I don’t know. Let’s see.”

The idea of a spinoff has clearly been given some serious thought by everyone involved. There’s definitely a demand from fans for more Ted Lasso, either way, so expanding the universe seems like a pretty solid idea. Nothing’s been set in stone yet, but judging by the show’s massive success, it seems almost a given.
