Few directors have exuded such talent throughout the course of their career as Woody Allen. Whether it’s cementing his reputation as one of cinema’s greatest assets with films such as Annie Hall and Manhattan, or ripping up a storm in the comedy circuit as a stand-up, the 79-year-old has showcased a remarkable drive that shows no signs of slowing down.

And today, Amazon Studios formally announced that Allen has signed on write and direct his first television show that will air exclusively on Prime Instant Video across the US, United Kingdom and Germany. Roy Price, vice president at Amazon Studios, spoke of his excitement on signing Allen for the as-yet-untitled project in a statement.

Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series. From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.

In typical self-deprecating fashion, Woody Allen himself weighed in on the announcement, stating the following:

“I don’t know how I got into this,” he said. “I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.”

Details are currently scarce on the ground, and we understand that the company is keeping any news of casting and story details under wraps for the time being. Even still, news of Allen signing on to direct a project that is exclusive to Amazon’s platform is certainly a major scoop for the studio. After all, with Netflix, Hulu and even HBO clamouring to secure the best and highest-rated talent in the industry, competition for the small screen is only to going to escalate as streaming services become ever more popular.
