After it was successfully backed via Kickstarter in 2014, That Dragon, Cancer now has a confirmed release date for a 2016 launch. In the latest Kickstarter update, the game’s developers unveiled a new trailer and confirmed just why they were so set on their chosen release date.
That Dragon, Cancer – which is set to tell the story of an infant’s four year fight against cancer – is dedicated to the memory of Joel Green, the son of game developer Ryan Green, who sadly lost his own fight with the disease at the age of five. Joel fought the disease from just twelve months old, but defied the odds for years after his parents were told he would originally only live for a few months. January 12th, 2016 would have been Joel’s seventh birthday, and his parents could think of no better day to release the game:
We are announcing our release date! That Dragon, Cancer will be released on January 12, 2016. We chose this date because it is Joel’s birthday, (he would have turned 7) and we couldn’t think of a better way to honor him than releasing this game.
The title, which will release through Steam, Ouya and others, will put players into an immersive storytelling experience that relates the experiences of Joel and his family during such a difficult time. The new trailer is unsurprisingly a tear-jerker, but it still manages to showcase what looks set to be a remarkable and vivid experience. It looks set to be a wonderful testament to the strength of Joel’s parents that they will manage to honour their son in such a way.
