Esteemed Japanese developer Square Enix is gearing up to announce a brand new console RPG in December, according to a report by Kotaku.

In an interview with CS-blog, president Yosuke Matsuda revealed that the company has a new role-playing game incubating in development and, judging by the following quote, the as-yet-unannounced title is pretty far in development.

“Actually, right now, we are readying a new role-playing game for home consoles that isn’t a remake,” Matsuda is quoted as saying. “In December, we’ll start with making an announcement. To avoid misunderstanding, among the forthcoming titles that do not include the home consoles, there are also various games bound for smartphones and PC. There are titles studios outside Japan are developing, too.”

“Starting early next year, I think we’ll be announcing various types of titles,” Matsuda said. “But at this stage, we cannot say which will be for home consoles or portables.”

Matsuda remained vague when it came to when the RPG will be formally unveiled, but chances are it will be revealed during Japan’s annual Jump Festa event or, perhaps more likely, at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event in early December.

When it comes to role-playing games, Square Enix is undoubtedly one of the best in the business. Over the years, the renown developer has produced countless Final Fantasy titles, Kingdom Hearts and the beloved, time-hopping adventure Chrono Trigger. Plus, given the fact that Matsuda stresses that the studio’s latest project is not a remake, it could well be that another game will have the opportunity to join Square Enix’s prestigious RPG pantheon.
