The 7 Best Moments From Zack Snyder’s Films

As we prepare ourselves for Justice League, there's one thing that we can be certain of: that one big Zack Snyder scene. You know, that one special moment in every single one of his films to date which has had fans talking for days, weeks, months, and even years later. His work might prove divisive and controversial at times, but there's no denying that the man has one of the most visually striking styles in modern cinema - heck, he can even count James Cameron as a fan of his efforts. Naturally, with such a keen eye for cinematic beauty, it comes as no surprise that his filmography has resulted in some scene-stealing and frankly breathtaking sequences. Name any other current director who's had as many of these as Snyder has - we'll wait. Deciding to celebrate the auteur, we embarked on a Snyder movie marathon and identified 7 great moments from his past films. Celebrity Zombie Shooting (Dawn Of The Dead) Before Snyder became known for his comic book movie adaptations, his feature-film debut arrived with a remake of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead in 2004. Written by James Gunn (yes, he of Guardians of the Galaxy fame) and starring Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames, this horror remake contained countless encounters of zombie versus human awesomeness. Oh, and lots of blood and guts, too. Our favorite scene, though, is when the survivors are on top of the mall's roof, playing a game of celebrity zombie lookalikes with the gun-shop owner across the street. In this sequence, they write a name on the whiteboard and the gunman shoots the target in the head. From Jay Leno to Burt Reynolds, brains are splattered in a much more nefarious version of 'I Spy.' It might not be the most visually enticing scene from the film, but this exchange alone captures the tone of Dawn of the Dead perfectly. Sure, it's supposed to be scary, but it's also meant to be tongue in cheek because zombies are funny. We wish The Walking Dead would learn a thing or two from this flick and loosen the top button once in a while. First Flight (Man Of Steel) Whenever someone complains about 2013's Man of Steel, we roll our eyes out loud. Would you really prefer another Superman film starring Brandon "Even Arrow Thinks I'm Lame" Routh and directed by Bryan "I Actually Hate the X-Men" Singer instead? No, so suck it up, sweetheart, and admit that Snyder's version rocked our bodies right. While the Smallville town fight is up there as a kickass scene in its own right, the brightest spark in the film is undoubtedly Clark's first flight in his Superman costume. The sheer power and intensity of this monumental event, beautifully complemented by Hans Zimmer's jaw-dropping music and Amir Mokri's visuals of the rocks and pebbles shaking, sent shivers down our spines. It's probably how anyone of us would feel if we took flight for the first time in our boring lives. Snyder brought some major dreams to life in Man of Steel, but it's his treatment of Supes' big debut that ranks up there with some of the most iconic imagery in cinema. Thinking about it even now still raises the tiny hairs on our arms. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Zack Snyder's stellar Superman. The Warehouse Scene (Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice) We've witnessed some incredible portrayals of Batman on the big screen over the years. Yet, none had shown the Dark Knight's superior fighting abilities and dexterity until 2016's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. And if there's one part that shows off all the years of hard training and studies of the martial arts, it's the warehouse scene where the Caped Crusader has to rescue Martha Kent from Lex Luthor's goons. If you've ever played any of the Arkham games, we're sure you've asked yourself at least once why Batman can't fight in exactly the same way in the movies. Well, Snyder must've tapped our Xboxes and PlayStations because he listened to every single one of our requirements. It probably took him hours to take notes and screenshots from the games, because this clash screamed stealth and brutality like nothing we've ever seen before. From skull-crushing beatdowns, to sneaky takedowns, to gadgetry wizardry at its finest, it was the Batman battle we've always wanted to witness in film. Yeah, some will question the Bat's "methods" and if he snapped a neck or two in the process, but you don't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, right? Take a bow, Snyder. You successfully brought the video game franchise's best moments to live action with aplomb. The Samurai Fight (Sucker Punch) Even though none of us still know what 2011's Sucker Punch was about, we can all agree that it at least looked pretty and was easy on the eyes. Moving away from the gothic and steampunk undertones of the rest of the flick, the best portion of this ludicrous adventure is undoubtedly when Babydoll dukes it out with the three samurais in feudal Japan. Why? We still have no idea, but you can Google it if you're bored. As expected, the color palette is typical Snyder-esque as are the camera techniques and tricks applied. It's all very much in your face and keeps you hooked on the edge of your seat, as the modern David versus Goliath(s) scenario plays out to a predictable outcome. However, it all gets a little wacky when the one samurai pulls out a machine gun and starts firing away at Babydoll, but the payoff is worth it at the end of the day if you stick with it. Still, we wonder what inspired this utterly strange battle to even be imagined. As undoubtedly Snyder's most bizarre body of work yet, Sucker Punch isn't exactly the first film you'd rush to watch on a night off. Nevertheless, when it does soar, it's beautiful to behold and take in. A piece of advice, though: maybe skip the whole confusing narrative bit and just fast-forward to the cool samurai fight instead. This Is Sparta (300) You know a scene is successful when it becomes an Internet meme overnight. However, none are quite as memorable as King Leonidas' "This is Sparta!" war cry and thrust kicking of the Persian messenger into the well. In fact, it's arguably the moment that most film audiences will associate with 300 forever. Picking a favorite part from this movie is an ardent task, since it's a tub of eye candy through and through, but this is the one highlight that encapsulates what Snyder is all about. The trick lies in the dual use of the slow motion and soundtrack (or lack thereof here to accentuate the oomph of Leonidas' powerful kick), but it synergizes in such a way that it embeds itself into our minds, much like a mental sticky note of sorts. If you're looking for a quotable scene bursting with violence and dripping with machismo that looks straight out of the pages of Frank Miller's seminal work, this is your go-to moment in the flick. We say screw the critics who hated 300, because this sequence alone was worth the price of admission. The Comedian's Death (Watchmen) Once again, Snyder's love for slow motion and close-up fights results in a picture-perfect delivery of a legendary comic book moment. Also, hearing Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" crooning throughout this to-and-fro battle, while a cloaked Ozymandias clashes with the Comedian before pushing him out of the window, makes sure that this remains simply unforgettable. Snyder is the undeniable mastermind behind this fight scene, but credit needs to go to his longtime cinematographer collaborator, Larry Fong, for bringing such vigor and detail to the events leading up to the Comedian's death. Every frame serves a unique purpose, with nothing being wasted as filler material, leaving us feeling as if this had been painted rather than filmed. It's remarkable to witness the frame-by-frame perfection achieved by Fong here. As with all the other films on this list, there are a handful of moments from Watchmen that could've been put here as well. However, it's the Comedian's death that stands out as the true instance of cinematic magic from Snyder and his team. In fact, it's got us excited to go watch it right now. Let's hope that Damon Lindelof's TV series takes some cues from this outstanding film. Wonder Woman's Arrival (Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice) Put aside your feelings for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice for one second and transport yourself back to the Doomsday battle. Batman's Batwing has just been destroyed by Lex Luthor's creation, and the Kryptonian monster stands in front of the Dark Knight poised to turn up the temperature and cook him into Kentucky Fried Bat. Looking hungry for death, Doomsday sets his heat vision on his target and fires away in anger. Suddenly, a figure drops in between Doomsy and Batsy, repelling the onslaught. As the dust settles, the epic music begins and Wonder Woman stands in her trademark pose. She blasts the creature with a powerful force of energy, before Superman swoops in and knocks him out of the vicinity for a momentary respite. There's a brief exchange between the three heroes setting the stage for them to stand together as the Trinity for the first time in cinematic history. HOW CAN YOU NOT LOSE YOUR MIND ABOUT THIS?! Forget about the editing. Ignore the plot holes. Pretend that Jesse Zuckerberg Eisenberg didn't exist in this universe. This was the single scene that we all wanted to see in film for decades, and boy, was it worth the wait.
