DC’s moving full steam ahead with what appears to be its next project, Birds of Prey, which star Margot Robbie is calling her “R-rated girl gang” movie. Despite the title, it looks to be only a loose adaptation of the superheroine team from the comics, which consists of Oracle, Huntress and Black Canary. For one, Harley Quinn appears to the central member of the group with the rest of the line-up having not been officially announced as yet.
A new report, however, might have just revealed who’ll be joining the Clown Princess of Crime in Birds of Prey. Popular YouTuber Grace Randolph’s claiming that her sources tell her that the team is five women strong and will consist of the expected trio of Harley, Black Canary and Huntress, as well as Lady Shiva and Katana, who was also previously seen in Suicide Squad as played by Karen Fukuhara.
The big shock here is that Randolph’s reporting that Barbara Gordon will not feature in any form in Birds of Prey. So that means no Batgirl or Oracle. As you’d expect, Harley’s taking charge of the team in this incarnation, which presumably means there’s no role for Babs in the film. That said, a different Batgirl will allegedly appear instead, as the BoP will be tasked with rescuing Cassandra Cain from her father David, who’s set to be the movie’s villain.
So, what do we make of all this? Well, it has to be pointed out that Randolph has been known to produce some trustworthy scoops before now, but this one does clash with what we’ve heard about Birds of Prey already. That’s mostly to do with the fact that rumors pointed to the film including Batgirl to set up her own solo movie, which is on the way. Both projects are based off scripts from Christina Hodson for one, and while plans can change, right now we’ll just have to wait and see.
Either way, keep an eye out for some concrete news on Birds of Prey, directed by Cathy Yan, at the WB panel at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con.
