Now that DC and Marvel have each set out their respective superhero stalls for the next five to six years, all eyes have turned to Sony with one burning question at the forefront of everyone’s mind: what is the future of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise?

We know that the company has postponed the third instalment in the series for at least two years, meaning the threequel won’t crawl onto the silver screen until 2018 at least. And it appears as though the studio wish to use that extended window to overhaul or, at the very least, fine-tune the series going into the future.

Since then, the rumour mill has been in full force as just last week reports suggested that Sony will adopt an all-female Spider-Man pic under the Glass Ceiling moniker. But today, we’ve learned of another speculative tidbit that suggests the company may bring back Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey for a sequel.

News comes by way of Christian Today, who report that the studio execs are contemplating a move that would see the character of Stacey return from the dead. As ludicrous as that may sound, it’s worth keeping in mind that golden rule of comics: no one dies except Uncle Ben.

Besides, Emma Stone’s pairing with Garfield’s Spidey brought a natural chemistry to each of the Sony-released films, so it’s not entirely out of the question for the company to venture down an avenue that would see Stone’s character return — even if it is in the form of a clone.

That’s not the only The Amazing Spider-Man 3 tidbit that the outlet shared, however, as it looks as though the character of Miles Morales is also waiting in the wings at Sony’s creative meetings.

Here’s what Andrew Garfield had to say about The Prowler:

“Miles Morales was a huge moment in this character’s comic book life. And I do believe that we can do that. It’s something I’m really interested in figuring out; an eloquent way of coexisting, or passing on the torch. I don’t have an answer, but I think it’s actually a really important move. I think it’s a really beautiful and important move.”
