Is Jon Bernthal Joining The Suicide Squad?

It looks like David Ayer's Suicide Squad movie is picking up speed, as Margot Robbie has reportedly signed on to play Harley Quinn, Jesse Eisenberg is in negotiations to reprise his role as Lex Luthor, and Jared Leto is in Warner Brothers' crosshairs to take on the role of the Joker. While those updates are extremely exciting, they don't yet paint a complete picture for Suicide Squad, which will follow an entire team of DC supervillains.

It looks like David Ayer’s Suicide Squad movie is picking up speed, as Margot Robbie has reportedly signed on to play Harley Quinn, Jesse Eisenberg is in negotiations to reprise his role as Lex Luthor, and Jared Leto is in Warner Brothers’ crosshairs to take on the role of the Joker. Additionally, three other actors have been approached for the supervillain team-up: Will Smith, Tom Hardy, and Ryan Gosling, and now we’ve learned that The Walking Dead’s Jon Bernthal may be in the mix as well.

While at Wizard World Tulsa this past weekend, Bernthal spoke about his work on David Ayer’s latest film, Fury. During a Q&A, a fan noted that some directors like to work with actors repeatedly from film to film, and asked Bernthal if he would accept a role in Suicide Squad if Ayer offered him one. His response?

“I can’t talk about that right now.”

Now, while it might seem like a stretch to immediately jump to conclusions and deduce that Bernthal has in fact joined Suicide Squad, it’s not outside the realm of possibility, and his response seems to indicate that there is something to talk about, even if he has to remain tight-lipped. So, it’s entirely possible that Bernthal is being eyed for a role, or is already in some kind of negotiations for one.

Personally, I’d love to see him take on the role of Deadshot, the longest-tenured member of the team and one of the DC universe’s deadliest assassins. Bernthal looks the part, and has the acting ability to pull it off and lead what’s been described as a “Dirty Dozen with supervillains.” He’s already won over the geek crowd with The Walking Dead, worked with Robbie on The Wolf of Wall Street, and made quite the impression in Fury. I’d be more than happy to see him tackle Suicide Squad next.

Tell us, would you like to see Jon Bernthal join the Suicide Squad movie? If so, who would you like to see him play? Sound off in the comments section below.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5th, 2016.
