No Big X-Men Cameos Planned For Deadpool 2

Though fans would have loved to see someone like Wolverine, or any other big name mutant show up in Deadpool, that was never going to happen. For the Merc with a Mouth's first solo outing, the movie had to be self-contained. Or at least, as self-contained as it could be while still residing in the larger X-Men universe. For Deadpool 2, however, throwing in a few familiar mutants might make sense, but according to writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, that's probably not going to happen.

Though fans were no doubt hoping to see someone like Wolverine, or any other big name mutant show up in Deadpool, that was never going to happen. For the Merc with a Mouth’s first solo outing, the movie had to be self-contained. Or at least, as self-contained as it could be while still residing in the larger X-Men universe. For Deadpool 2, however, throwing in a few familiar mutants might be more feasible, but according to writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, that’s probably not going to happen.

In a recent interview, the duo stated that they’d only be willing to bring in one of the more well known X-Men characters if it makes sense for the story, and while there may be a time for that down the road, right now it doesn’t sound like they’re too interested in doing such a thing:

“You kinda don’t want a Ferrari in Deadpool unless it’s for a real purpose in the sense that Deadpool is a gritty, grimy, smaller thing, with characters you aren’t as familiar with. It’s a little bit like lovable losers. It’s not the A-list of superheroes, necessarily. … The occasional cameo or appearance by an A-list type person could be really funny and/or dramatic. So we have an eye open for those things, but we don’t want to just put people in it because we can now, if that makes sense.”

We’d certainly be excited to hear about some sort of cameo in the upcoming sequel, but for the time being, keeping them out of the Deadpool series does make sense. After all, there’s a lot of confusion and headaches with regards to the continuity and timeline currently established in the X-Men films, and putting one of the mutants into Wade Wilson’s world may make that even worse.

Furthermore, there’s also the fact that it might hurt Deadpool in the long run if he had to start playing by the rules of a shared universe. We’ve seen many films fall victim to that and right now, especially since the series is still so new, it’s probably best to just let it be its own thing. We’ve no doubt that the Merc with a Mouth will eventually cross paths with some of the studio’s more prominent mutants at some point, but it’s definitely not going to be happening in the near future.

Tell us, did you want to see Wolverine, Magneto, Professor X or anyone else appear in Deadpool 2, or are you happy that Reese and Wernick are keeping the spotlight on the titular hero for now? Sound off in the usual place and let us know.
