It should come as no surprise that HBO has renewed their hit fantasy series Game of Thrones for a third season. Deadline is reporting that after a record setting season 2 premiere and a very strong second episode, the network has announced that they will be bringing back the show for season three.

“Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season – and then surpassed them,” said HBO’s programming president Michael Lombardo.

Game Of Thrones is based off the bestselling novels by George R.R. Martin. Currently, there are five novels in the series and a sixth one in the works. There is more than enough material to keep the show going for years and should it maintain its current popularity (which I don’t see why it wouldn’t), you can expect Game Of Thrones to be on the air for quite a while.

The show has done tremendously well with both critics and audiences. The recent second season premiere drew in 3.9 million viewers and has already been viewed by a gross audience of 8.3 million viewers, which puts it on track to surpass the first season average of 9.3 million.

As a huge fan of the series I’m thrilled with this news, despite it being expected and almost assumed. Game Of Thrones is one of the best shows on television and beats out almost any other series in terms of acting, storytelling and production values. It’s consistently excellent and already things are off to a great start with the second season.

Season 2 has me hooked and having not read the novels, I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see where the storyline goes. Now with the announcement of season three, I’m more excited than ever to continue on with the adventures of Westeros.

Be sure to tune in Sundays at 9pm on HBO for new episodes of Game of Thrones.
