Even after enjoying a thirteen-episode run of his own series and putting in various Arrowverse guest shots to follow, there’s still much to be explored when it comes to Matt Ryan’s John Constantine. But to his credit, many DC fans believe his portrayal to be the definitive one – and, to be honest, this writer has to agree with them.
But one aspect that we haven’t really seen fleshed out is that of his bisexuality. I mean, he did technically hit on Citizen Cold months back, but the only person with which we’ve seen him engage in sexual congress on Legends of Tomorrow has been that of Sara Lance – who actually happens to be bisexual herself.
Well, as it turns out, we’ll soon learn of a time when the demonologist caught the scent of a man when season 4 picks up. Revealed to TV Line by executive producer and showrunner Phil Klemmer, said dude had a thing with Constantine at some point between the events witnessed during his eponymous NBC series and his introduction to The CW in Arrow‘s fourth year.
Furthermore, “that relationship, with a man, will have had tragic overtones, and as such still haunts John.” Right now, it can’t be said if this fella is still among the living, but I imagine the producers will weave it into a story involving a mythical creature. That seems like something John may have gotten involved in, after all.
Now, this is speculation on my part, but the creative minds behind the show could’ve looked to some of the more recent comics starring Constantine, namely those written by James Tynion IV and Ming Doyle. In that particular run, our favorite exorcist was indeed romantically involved with someone of the same sex, so that’s definitely one possibility for inspiration. Even if not, though, it doesn’t hurt to check it out for yourself.
Legends of Tomorrow returns for its fourth season on Monday, October 22 on The CW.
