The 10 Most Significant Easter Eggs Of Daredevil Season 2

Apart from the great drama, Daredevil’s first season was a real treat for comics fans as it was stuffed full of references to the character's source material. Everything from the gritty acclaimed work of Frank Miller to the Matt Murdock's wackier early days were nodded to in the series. Season two, however, is certainly a lot less stuffed with easter eggs and references to the comics – which is something that is to be expected as the show builds up its own storyline and mythology. However, there are still plenty of nods to characters and events from Daredevil’s long history within the show. What with so many big players around this season – The Punisher, Elektra, the Hand – there were always going to be. So, we've managed to whittle it down to just the 10 most significant, either in terms of how they related to something big in the source material or if we think they are hinting at something which will be important as the show goes on. If you spotted anything that we missed, feel free to head on over to the comments and leave it there. Oh, and don’t read on unless you’re completely up to date, as there will definitely be spoilers. 10) The Punisher’s Victims Firstly, a few of the criminals on the Punisher’s hit list were characters ripped from the comics, both minor and major. The leader of the Kitchen Irish gang is Nesbitt, a character who shares his name and position with a comics character created by Garth Ennis and Leandro Fernandez. The Punisher also goes after The Dogs of Hell biker gang. Marvelites might remember the gang’s Nevada branch turning up in the 15th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s first season, "Yes Man." The most significant mobster who Frank Castle picks off though is brutal Irishman Finn in episode four. He's based on the disfigured Finn Cooley from the comics. The character’s death in the show – the Punisher shoots him in the face – is a reference to the comics version’s horrible facial features. The actor who plays him, by the way, is Tony Curran, and this is his second appearance in the MCU after playing Thor’s grandfather Bor in Thor: The Dark World. 9) Blake Tower Credited as a series regular, Steven Rider joined the cast of Daredevil for season two as DA Reyes’ assistant Blake Tower. Tower is actually a pretty important character in the comics, having appeared regularly since 1975. In the comics, Blake Tower is a brilliant lawyer, and later DA, who has had frequent dealings with superheroes, being a strong defender of Daredevil in particular. Apart from representing the likes of Spider-Man, Luke Cage and Iron Fist in court, he also worked alongside Jennifer Walters AKA She-Hulk. In the series, he doesn’t exactly begin on the same side as Nelson & Murdock, although he does eventually feed Karen information on Reyes’ cover-up. Given the character’s large role in the comics, we would imagine that we'll be seeing much more of Tower as Marvel's Netflix universe continues. 8) The Gladiator Melvin Potter appeared throughout season one as the, er, specialist outfitter who decked out Wilson Fisk with lightweight body armour – and later did the same for Daredevil. In the comics, Potter was the supervillain Gladiator before he reformed and became a clothing designer. While he still has yet to become the Gladiator, Potter does don protective armour during season two which resembles his comics outfit. He also picks up a buzzsaw blade in self-defence, referencing the original character’s usual choice of weapon. As in season one, the stilts which belong to classic Daredevil villain Stilt-Man can still be glimpsed in Potter’s workshop. Whether this repeated easter egg is a set up for a future appearance by the character on the show we don't know. However, as Stilt-Man would seem a little kooky in the world of Netflix’s Daredevil, we think that’s probably not the case. 7) Roxxon If you've been paying attention, you will know that Roxxon are one of the most prominent antagonists of the whole of the MCU. While they haven’t really had their time in the limelight yet, the company has appeared in all three Iron Man movies, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter. They were also briefly mentioned in season one of Daredevil. In season two, they get a more substantial role, as Matt and Elektra investigate Roxxon’s Japanese arm - Asano Robotics - which is in league with the Hand. Incidentally, Asano is its own separate company in the comics and is led by Yoshida Asano, an enemy of Tony Stark’s. Speaking of Marvel corporations, when Karen visits Ben Urich’s old office at the New York Bulletin, you can see a framed front page with the headline ‘Cybertek Settles.’ This refers to the HYDRA-led organization that created Deathlok in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 6) The Choice The crux of episode three is the Punisher chaining up Daredevil and forcing him to make an impossible choice – break his moral code and kill him, or he will kill a criminal. This plot is lifted wholesale from ‘The Choice,’ an issue of The Punisher from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon – complete with the gun taped to Daredevil’s hand. The criminal he kills is Nelson & Murdock client Elliot ‘Grotto’ Grope. The character derives from Daredevil #168 from 1981, again by Frank Miller. Grotto does not have such a large role in the comic, however, and is just a minor stooge for the mob. Coincidentally – or not? – he appears in the same issue that also introduces Elektra. Furthermore, there are repeated references throughout the season to the Punisher turning Hell’s Kitchen into a war zone. This is, of course, also the subtitle of the character’s third movie outing, 2008’s Punisher: War Zone. 5) All The Jessica Jones References Daredevil season two is still a largely standalone affair, but it does feature many references to its sister show Jessica Jones, sowing the seeds of the characters eventually coming together for The Defenders. Firstly, Claire tells Foggy about treating a guy who is “much stronger” than Matt. This refers to Luke Cage, who she operated on in Jessica Jones’ finale episode. Likewise, Detective Mahoney at one point mentions his colleague Clemons, who was killed in JJ’s first season. The recurring character of DA Samantha Reyes also debuted in that show's finale. The finale of Daredevil season 2 features the most on-the-nose JJ reference, as Jeryn Hogarth crosses over to hire Foggy for her law firm. Earlier in the series, Marci namechecks one of Hogarth's clients, and it's none other than Jessica Jones. Along with the Iron Fist reference in season one (the truck holding the chemicals that blinded Matt belonged to Rand Oil – the company of Danny Rand’s father), this means that all the soon-to-be Defenders have been referenced in Daredevil. 4) The Mysterious Nun In season one, we got a chance to get to know Jack Murdock, Matt’s father, through flashback scenes. However, apart from the odd vague reference, we have never met his mother. Or have we? Season two’s third episode opens with a memory of Matt’s childhood where he is being treated by a nun at St Agnes’ Orphanage. We don’t know much about her, but she is clearly very fond of the boy and seems to have a different mentality to Matt’s boxing father telling him “don’t get up, Matty, stay down.” In the comics storyline ‘Born Again’ by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, Matt discovers that the mother he thought dead is actually living as, guess what, a nun. There is nothing to suggest that this is Matt’s mother, but we're pretty certain that this is leading to an adaptation of the fan-favourite ‘Born Again’ storyline. Perhaps it will form the crux of season three? 3) Elektra’s Fate One of the most iconic moments in Daredevil comics history is the death of Elektra, so fans of the character probably aren't surprised by her demise at the end of the season. She is killed in an extremely similar scenario and manner to her death in the comics, although she is murdered by Bullseye rather than the Hand. The Hand are, however, responsible for bringing her back to life, just as they are clearly plotting to in the last scenes of the second season. The clothes Elektra is buried in also very much resemble her comics' costume. The Hand are obviously a huge presence in the comics as well. While Nobu is an original character, his immortal nature suggests he is the series' version of Kirigi, the head of the Hand in the comics. His second-in-command, Hirochi, is also dervied from a comics character, one who was the ruler of a faction of the Hand. 2) The Punisher And The Blacksmith The drug dealer known as the Blacksmith, who is responsible for the death of Frank's family, is an original character, although he shares his name with a bunch of unrelated individuals from Marvel history, including an alien Skrull. It is revealed to be Colonel Schoonover - whose name is a nod to comics artist Brent Schoonover. In case you are wondering, the nursery rhyme Frank repeats throughout the season is made up for the show. Some have suggested that it reflects the change in Hell’s Kitchen’s problems. In season one, there was only one big threat, Wilson Fisk, while now there's both the Punisher and the Hand. One Batch, Two Batch, Penny and Dime, geddit? At the end of the series, Frank torches his family's home - but not before recovering a disc labelled 'Micro.' This is the name of Frank's tech-savvy associate in the comics (he was already referenced as a hacktivist friend of Skye's on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). So expect to see him in The Punisher's rumoured spinoff show. 1) There’s Only Room For One Kingpin Episode eight of season two caused viewers’ jaws to drop when Wilson Fisk was brought back into the fold, as he manipulates Frank Castle into basically becoming his hitman. At the start of episode nine, we see how Fisk has begun to climb his way to the top of the prison’s pecking order. Fans will no doubt have smiled when Dutton claimed he was “the Kingpin of this bitch,” naturally referencing Fisk’s moniker in the comics. Later in the same episode, Fisk finally uses the term to refer to himself, saying "in prison, there’s only room for one kingpin.” Fisk’s lawyer Benjamin Donovan is another character derived from the comics, although he is visually very different. The original is more commonly known as Big Ben, due to his heavy build. He is usually the lawyer of Luke Cage and Claire Temple, so we should probably expect to see him turn up in Luke Cage next… A series that, of course, had a sneaky teaser trailer tagged onto the end of this season.
