As revealed by Deadline, British actress Rhona Mitra has been cast as Mercy Graves for the upcoming fourth season of The CW show. First created for Superman: The Animated Series, Mercy’s usually depicted as the loyal bodyguard/assistant of Lex Luthor. She previously inspired the character of Tess Mercer in Smallville and Tao Okomoto played the part in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

Mitra will be portraying a very different version of Mercy, however, as this iteration will be going at it solo and attempting to make a name for herself away from the service of the Luthor family. Judging by this description, it sounds like she’ll also be an ally of Agent Liberty’s (Sam Witwer) alien-hating “human-first” movement.

“Mercy Graves (Mitra) is an ex-CADMUS agent who  has always believed in human exceptionalism. But with both Lex and Lillian in prison, Mercy is stepping out of the Luthor shadow and running her own show. With her biting wit and lethal brawn, Mercy steadily becomes a key figure in National City’s growing “human-first” movement.”

Moreover, Robert Baker has been cast as Otis Graves, Mercy’s brother who’s described as her “defacto right hand man. What he lacks in brains, he makes up for with his savant-like abilities to assassinate aliens.” Though the sibling connection with Mercy is original to Supergirl, fans might recognize Otis from his appearances in the original Superman movies. In those films, Otis was the bumbling sidekick to Gene Hackman’s Lex, as played by Ned Beatty.

Of course, Mercy and Otis are just two of the many new additions coming to Supergirl in season 4. Other notable newcomers include David Ajala as Manchester Black, a new villain arriving to cause havoc in National City, and Nicole Maines as Nia Nal, the first transgender superhero ever on TV.

Be sure catch the Girl of Steel’s return on Sunday, October 14th.
