Ray Fisher responds to Joss Whedon’s ‘self-own’ interview

Following an interview with Joss Whedon earlier this week, in which the embattled director finally broke his silence on accusations of misconduct leveled by actor Ray Fisher and others on the set of 2017’s Justice League, the actor has responded to Whedon’s comments on Twitter.

Whedon revealed in an interview with New York Magazine that he cut down the role of Ray Fisher’s Cyborg in the superhero movie because his story “logically made no sense” to him, and he called Fisher “a bad actor in both senses.”

Whedon’s comments about Fisher, as well as making some stomach-churning remarks about feeling “powerless” to resist sleeping with young women on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has had an overwhelmingly negative response from DC fans on social media. The director also denied an allegation from Gal Gadot, saying he threatened to end the Wonder Woman actor’s career if she didn’t back him up.

Some have pointed out that far from taking accountability for his actions, the interview seemed to only dig himself deeper on everyone’s shit list, effectively making Whedon the maestro of his own cancelation.

Fisher acknowledged The Avengers director’s epic self-own in a tweet, saying, “Looks like Joss Whedon got to direct an endgame after all…”

Fisher, who portrayed the only African-American superhero in Justice League, went on to say that “Rather than address all the lies and buffoonery today—I will be celebrating the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tomorrow the work continues.” The actor added a hashtag celebrating the legendary civil rights leader, “#MLKDay.”

Fisher also put the phrase “A>E” at the end of his tweet, which is short for “Accountability>Entertainment,” a motto he has used throughout coming out publicly with his misconduct allegations against Whedon. Others have since backed up Fisher’s claims and the conversation spurred a number of other former Whedon collaborators to come out with their own allegations against the director.

The 2021 HBO Max release, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, was much more critically hailed than the 2017 version, with particular praise from many critics going to Fisher’s performance. In the redux of the movie, Cyborg had a much more extended role, something Snyder himself called “the heart” of the film.
