This cast just keeps getting more intriguing. With Robert Rodriguez set to start production on Machete Kills – sequel to the 2010 ‘grindhouse’ flick Machete, itself an adaptation of a fake Grindhouse trailer – in the near future, we keep hearing more and more about the cast.

But why hear the latest bit of news from me when you can it hear it from Machete himself, Danny Trejo?

In an interview with Moviehole, Trejo explained the following:

“…Machete Kills is going to be a lot more over-the-top than Machete. We’ve got Sofia Vergara, who is a star in her own right, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Zoe Saldana – and guess what? I get to kiss all of ‘em.”

If only all casting reports could be that colorfully worded.

Vergara, Alba, and Rodriguez we already knew about (along with Amber Heard), but Saldana’s name is new, and exciting. With scene-stealing supporting roles in Star Trek, Avatar, and the underrated The Losers, she’s proven her acting, action, and ensemble chops time and time again, and the thought of her sharing the screen with Trejo is certainly a fun proposition.

In addition to a cornucopia of femme fatales, Machete Kills will also feature Demian Bichir – who earned an Oscar nomination for his role in A Better Life earlier this year – and Mel Gibson as the villain.

I’ll admit, I was severely underwhelmed by the original Machete. IT failed to capture the fun, spontaneity, or surprise of the original fake trailer. But I’m always willing to give Robert Rodriguez another shot, and the stellar cast he’s assembled indicates there’s a fair amount of creativity up his sleeve this time around.

Machete Kills slices its way into theatres in 2013.
