The Chicago Cubs are among the worst teams in baseball this year. They are a team in full rebuild mode, and they look be be major sellers come the trade deadline. But with Cubs fans being Cubs fans, attendance at Wrigley Field is still very good.
They seem to have bought into the hope for the future from president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer. And that future got a little brighter today with the deal for 20 year old Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler.
The Cubs won a bidding war against the White Sox, the Yankees, and the Red Sox, to name a few. Soler was signed to a reported $30 million, 9 year guaranteed contract with an opt out clause once he’s arbitration eligible. He’s viewed as a sure thing by many baseball scouts. The legit five tool prospect goes 6’4″ and 225 pounds, and with any luck he’ll be patrolling the outfield for the Cubs by 2014 at the latest.
