With a franchise as robust as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, differing opinions are about the only thing it can confidently count on. While one person may like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the other may hate it. One person could adore Thor: Love and Thunder, but the next person could absolutely despise it. One person could easily appreciate Eternals, but another fan could — who are we kidding? Everyone hates Eternals.
Nevertheless, Marvel fans’ divided opinions were put on full display when The Direct asked them to rank the MCU’s movies from best to worst following Avengers: Endgame. Lo and behold, Love and Thunder once again found itself ranked among the worst. Yes, even including Eternals, which is a far cry from how fans felt about the movie immediately following Quantumania‘s lackluster premiere.
That said, a good amount of fans ranked the two movies as follows, with Love and Thunder and Quantumania duking it out to remain as far away from Eternals as possible.
Then again, the following ranking has Eternals high up on the list and Love and Thunder completely at the bottom. It also has Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ranked second to last, so perhaps it’s best to take that with a grain of salt; the movie was, after all, the highest-ranked Phase Four film on Rotten Tomatoes, second only to Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Some people didn’t hate Love and Thunder at all, though, which explains its 77 percent audience score rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As you can see, some fans ranked it right under No Way Home or as close to the top of the list as possible, which we have to say is shocking.
At the end of the day, it was Love and Thunder that lost, as it was repeatedly ranked at the very bottom of the list. Yes, even below Eternals.
Yet here we are again, with opinions split down the middle. You can always count on Marvel fans to be divided.
The truth of the matter is movies — as well as TV shows, books, and art as a whole — will always be subjective. The only real guarantee is that no two people will love all of the same things.
Marvel plays into this quite successfully, offering fans something different with each movie. Whether the movies it has been offering as of late hold up against those of past years is another matter entirely and has been a debate among Marvel fans ever since the disappointing debut of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
