Rumored ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ change to Harley Quinn has DC diehards losing their minds

Joker: Folie à Deux might be doomed before its release.

Joker: Folie à Deux has been the topic of much speculation online, especially among DC fans, who are not too fond of the rumored artistic liberties taken in the film. First, the rumor that the Joker sequel would be a musical divided the internet, followed by the theory that the story would be told from Harley Quinn’s perspective. A change to the villain’s backstory might just be the last straw.

On Feb. 22, industry insider KC Walsh filled Joker fans in on a new rumor regarding the sequel. In a tweet, they claimed that Harley Quinn will not play the role of Joker’s doctor in the upcoming film, but instead, will be his peer and another patient in Arkham Asylum.

What this insider considers a “slight” change is actually a fundamental aspect of Harley’s character, which explains why DC diehards are finding it hard to accept. On Reddit, fans consider the change to Joker’s backstory in the first film much easier to swallow due to him never having had a solid, official origin story. As for Harley, being a doctor drawn into a life of madness was a defining trait and part of what made her relationship with Joker interesting for the audience.

It also doesn’t help matters the fact that Harley’s characterization has remained constant in all portrayals of the character until now, making some feel like this is a simple case of aversion to the source material.

It’s wise to remember that for now, this remains a simple rumor, and without an official confirmation, fans might be freaking out over nothing. Nevertheless, it’s safe to assume DC might be in hot waters if more and more changes continue to be made to beloved characters.

Joker: Folie à Deux premieres in theaters on Oct. 4, 2024.
