A new HBO series is turning heads, and no — we’re not talking about The Last of Us.
Far from the Cordyceps-ravaged world Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are bringing to life each Sunday night, the network is preparing audiences for a very different series. A fresh, non-apocalyptic series is headed to HBO and HBO Max later this year, in the form of The Idol. Here’s when audiences can expect the fresh drama to arrive on screens.
The Idol release date
HBO — through releases like The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and White Lotus — is gradually separating itself from the pack. Other streamers, including Netflix and Hulu, are losing their grip on quality content, and even Amazon Prime struggles to compete with HBO’s increasingly superior content. With this in mind, audiences are particularly excited for the release of The Idol.
The upcoming series has several big names attached to it, including creators Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson, and stars up-and-comer Lily-Rose Depp in the title role. Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, plays Jocelyn, an aspiring pop artist. After suffering a nervous breakdown and losing out on a tour, Jocelyn is working hard to reenter the spotlight, with the help of a self-help guru and cult leader, played by The Weeknd.
The series has been in development for more than a year, and soon-to-be fans are ticking down the days until it arrives on HBO. It’s slated for release in 2023, as revealed by a teaser HBO released in October of 2022. As of now, there’s no official release date other than the broad “2023,” but fans are hopeful that the series will arrive on HBO soon.
