Amazon’s ‘Blade Runner’ series gets directorial support from ‘Game of Thrones’ alum

The pre-production gears of Blade Runner 2099 continue to grind away behind the scenes, with the Amazon series based on the fan-favorite films securing a Game of Thrones alum to direct its pilot. 

Jeremy Podeswa, the man behind a number of the most prolific (and in some cases, divisive) episodes of Game of Thrones has been tasked with sitting in the director’s chair for the Blade Runner sequel series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 

Podeswa lent his talents to Game of Thrones starting in season five. He went on to direct the season six premiere and its follow-up, as well as the first and last episodes of season seven, so glean from that what you will. Some of Podeswa’s more recent directorial efforts can be found in The Handmaid’s Tale and The Mosquito Coast.

Blade Runner 2099 was ordered to series in September last year, with original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott serving as executive producer. Blade Runner 2049 writer Michael Green joins Scott in an EP capacity. 

Of course, with Blade Runner being the beloved slice of cinemas it is, the news of a sequel TV series naturally had folks questioning whether or not it was really necessary. Given Blade Runner 2099 has only just locked in the director for its pilot, we’d imagine that we’re a good while off seeing the series land on Prime Video. Our best guess is we’re looking at a mid-2024 premiere at the very earliest.
