Yesterday, The Mandalorian concluded the run of its somewhat divisive third season. The latest part of Din Djarin’s story ended with some action, planet reclamation, and adoption, but for many, concerns about a traitor in the midst remain unresolved today.
For those who did not watch, it is advised you turn away now if you wish to avoid spoilers. For those who have, it is made clear early on in this season Elia Kane is still working for some remnant of the Galactic Empire after she effectively lobotomizes Dr. Pershing for violating rules the New Republic has against cloning. She previously served on Moff Gideon’s ship before seemingly reforming, and, in the seventh episode of the show and the 23rd overall dubbed “The Spies,” the audience gets confirmation this is a lie. However, here, though the title suggests another is lurking, we do not get any confirmation before the year’s story goes dark.
Some people thought it could be the Armorer given her strategic disappearances and Moff Gideon’s Mandalorian helmet having a similar look, but in the finale, she fought alongside her people against the Imperial remnant Moff Gideon commanded. This leaves a huge question mark which may be resolved in the show’s developing fourth season, but other theories are out there, too.
The HITC culture site reminds its readers in a new piece several episode titles this year touch on biblical themes. There are names like “The Apostate” and “The Convert,” and so “The Spies” could also be in this similar category. Of course, knowledge of faith is not something everyone possesses, so for those who do not know, at one point in Christian mythology, Moses sends a group of Israelite chieftains to scout the Land of Canaan to find a location to settle. This could then allude to the Mandalorian scouting party who clear the planet ahead of the orbiting fleet coming on down and, if not, some think it could be Bo-Katan herself (yes, really).
For now, audiences will have to wait and see and let the sea of speculation continue. It would certainly be dark to have Bo-Katan betray her people after the journey she has been on, but the broader Star Wars franchise is often awash in misery, so it could fit. Here’s hoping we get some answers soon — or at least in the movie Dave Filoni is going to direct which will wrap his connections.
