The Green brothers have been content creators since 2007 and have done numerous things such as the creation of VidCon, and have run other channels such as CrashCourse. But the duo is more than just their YouTube career and their influence in the online community. The pair have found success in their individual work outside of the camera.

Who is John Green?

John Green is the first half of the Green Brothers and the oldest of the two. Asides from his YouTube work, John is an author, known for his works such as The Fault in Our Stars, Looking For Alaska, and Paper Towns just to name a few. Interestingly, the titles that were mentioned also received film and TV adaptations that starred notable actors and actresses.

Green’s books have received positive reception and have continuously appeared on the New York Times Best Sellers list. His most popular title is the aforementioned The Fault in Our Stars, which was the first of his titles to receive a live-action adaption, both in English and Hindi. Meanwhile, the book itself was translated into 55 languages. John’s work led to what’s now called the “John Green Effect,” where audiences and readers sought relatable characters that are genuine and authentic.

John has received numerous awards in the literary scene, such as the 2018 American Library Association Award for Turtles All the Way Down, Looking for Alaska was a finalist for Los Angeles Times Book Prize Award in the Young Adult Novel category, and Paper Towns won 2009’s Edgar Allan Poe Award for “Best Young Adult Novel.”

Asides from his author career, he and his brother launched numerous fundraising and advocacy campaigns, such as the Project for Awesome, a community-driven movement in which they’d raised funds for multiple charities including UNICEF, Toys for Tots, and Autism Speaks.

Who is Hank Green?

The second half of the VlogBrothers is Hank Green, the younger of the two. AHe hosted a Science YouTube channel, known as the SciShow, where he talks about STEM topics such as space, chemistry, physics, etc. You may also know him as the guy on TikTok who would talk/debunk scientific claims made on the platform to his 7 million followers.

He also has his own PBS show titled Eons, hosted by him, SciShow writer Blake de Pastino, and paloentologist Kallie Moore. The show is about the Earth’s history and premiered on June 26, 2017. Aside from this science-based web series, he also launched a handful of podcasts, such as Holy F***ing Science, a science podcast that’s presented like a gaming channel, DELETE THIS, a podcast with his wife, and SciShow Tangents, a science podcast that delivers science facts. He also released a book, titled An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, which was published in 2018, followed by its sequel in 2020.

Hank also made waves recently when he revealed he has cancer. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has begun chemotherapy. According to Mayo Clinic, this type of cancer affects the lymphatic system and causes swollen lymph nodes and growths. Hank claimed that the doctors caught the disease early and that this type of cancer is treatable. When it comes to his content creation duties, he said he will still be doing them but would be slowing down due to his health issues.

Hank and John Green have done a lot for the online community. They’ve provided educational content, fundraising campaigns for charities, and created alternatives for everyday media. Both have become a huge influence on the internet, and their fans love and support them.
