James Gunn is taking his next big step towards finding the DCU’s Superman

The search for DC's newest Superman is heating up.

The search for the next Superman is heating up as speculated screen tests are beginning at DC Studios. DC’s co-chiefs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, have gathered a shortlist of actors and actresses to come in and test not only their acting abilities but also their chemistry to lead Superman: Legacy.

The full list of names has not yet been revealed. However, a few have been confirmed to come in for screen tests. Fan favorite David Corenswet, along with Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney, will be tested for the role of Superman. Meanwhile, Sex Education star Emma MacKay, Rachel Brosnahan, and Phoebe Dynevor will be reading for Lois Lane.

According to Deadline, screen testing for the two lead roles will begin around Father’s Day weekend or the Monday or Tuesday after. At the same time, test deals are still in negotiations and still haven’t been finalized yet. It also reported that more actors and actresses are expected to join the screen tests.

Development on Superman: Legacy began six months before Henry Cavill departed from DC Studios after his triumphant cameo appearance in Black Adam. So far, multiple fans picked Corenswet as the most suitable candidate the role since he meets Gunn’s criteria the most closely. The DC co-head has made it clear that he has no intentions of commenting on audition rumors, saying it’s up to the individual actors if they want to disclose that.

Superman: Legacy is the first film in the upcoming DC reboot and the third installment of DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The film is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025.
