What does ‘ATP’ mean in texting, TikTok, and other social media?

What it means and how to use it.

Most often, the acronym “ATP” means “at this point” or “at that point” on social media and text messaging. However, it sometimes holds different meanings in different contexts – the acronym has also been known to mean “answer the phone.”

This acronym also has a couple of alternatives that can be used to convert similar notions. ATM, for example, means “at the moment” and can be used to convey a very similar idea. Not to be confused with an automated teller machine, it is often seen more commonly on TikTok or Snapchat.

The shorthand RN can also suffice for these situations. It shortens the phrase “right now.”

Many TikTok creators take the time to compile texting and social media acronym meanings. Searching for them on social media can be an easy way to learn about their meanings and contexts.

As for prior meaning, using ATP to tell someone to pick up the phone may not be effective based on new meanings. In those situations, it may be best to simply spell it out.

Phrases like ATM, TN, and ATP should mostly be used in casual internet settings. For example, ATP may be used to say “I don’t know if I’m even going to go ATP” but probably shouldn’t be used in formal emails or correspondence.

The best way to get used to texting shorthand like this is to try it out and look for it over social media. Also, websites like Urban Dictionary and NetLingo can be helpful to better understand any type of shorthand you see on a daily basis.
