Two women get escorted out of Florida bar for allegedly applying makeup in bathroom. They claim it’s not the real reason: ‘Is it because we’re Black?’

An interaction at a Seaside, Florida, bar has gone viral on TikTok after a creator had an uncomfortable encounter in the restroom. The creator, who goes by the username @deamakeda, was confronted by a fellow customer and eventually escorted out of the premises because she and her friend were applying their makeup in the bathroom.

Makeda began recording the entire incident, and at one point she accused the people confronting her with the statement, “Is it because we’re black?” That single accusation drew the attention of more than 2.5 million viewers on the platform, with some fully supporting her while others expressed doubt that race had anything to do with the confrontation.

In follow-up videos, she explained that she was applying makeup in the bathroom because she was short on time and was heading to the beach for a photoshoot. Many viewers took issue with Makeda recording on her phone inside a restroom, while others criticized her for allegedly taking up too much space around the sinks.

She exchanged words with the guard

One user summarized why they believed people ultimately had an issue with Makeda and her friend: “To be honest, you guys were probably taking too much space at the sink for people who are trying to wash their hands and leave. And everyone saying this is a powder room, no it isn’t.” The user continued, “A powder room is usually separate from the restroom. There is usually an area where you can sit in front of the mirrors and do your makeup.”

Eventually, someone apparently reported the situation to a male security guard, who came to escort the two women from the premises. As Makeda was being escorted out, she exchanged heated words with the guard.

One user defended her, writing, “You don’t have to explain yourself. Racists will make excuses for anything. You all did nothing wrong. Glad you stood up for yourself and called them out, but most importantly that you’re safe.” At one point, Makeda compared her experience to allegations of racist behavior involving some Argentinians during the FIFA World Cup.

One user responded, “I’m Argentinian and would never. It really hurts to know that people are really out here saying crazy shit like that. So disappointing.”

The conversation shifted to Argentina

Makeda later posted another video specifically addressing Argentinians. She said that although many people were offended by the comment she made to the people she believed were being racist — “She acting like she’s from Argentina?” — her criticism was not directed at Argentinians as a whole.

She then referenced Argentina’s well-documented controversies involving race, including the infamous “Big N– Burgers” restaurant and multiple FIFA investigations into racist chants and statements by some Argentine supporters during the country’s run to the World Cup final.

Makeda ultimately made it to her photoshoot. But the debate surrounding the incident continues. Some people see her point, while others do not. Many viewers, however, landed somewhere in the middle, urging everyone involved to simply treat one another with respect.
