Is Green Lantern in ‘Superman: Legacy?’

Gunn's Superman is set to debut in a world already teeming with superheroes.

Superman: Legacy is on a roll with its casting. Just two weeks ago, the film found its Superman and Lois Lane in the forms of David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, respectively. Now, the film — which will be the foundation for the DCU moving forward — has announced that it will add a few familiar superheroes into the mix.

The short answer? Yes. Nathan Fillion, one of the incarnations of the Green Lantern and a popular fan cast for Hal Jordan, will be portraying the superhero in Superman: Legacy. However, there’s just one twist — he won’t be playing Hal Jordan; he’ll be playing Guy Gardner.

Guy Gardner isn’t quite as well known to the general public as Hal Jordan, but he’s a huge fan-favorite among comics fans. He’s popular for being one of the more abrasive (some might say annoying) Green Lanterns. Guy often breaks the rules during his heroic activities, but time and time again, he’s proven himself to be a worthy member of the Green Lantern Corps. The character has previously been adapted in animation — appearing in shows such as Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold — but this will be his live-action debut.

As mentioned previously, Nathan Fillion will portray Guy Gardner in the film. Fillion has worked with Gunn before, including in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, where he briefly performed The Detachable Kid — a villain with the power to remove his own limbs. He also collaborated with Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. III, where he portrayed Master Karja. And, of course, he also starred in Gunn’s 2006 directorial debut, Slither, as the main character Bill Pardy.

Fillion’s got a pretty robust filmography. In addition to a starring role in Firefly, Fillion once headlined the police procedural Castle and has lent his voice to shows such as Gravity Falls and M.O.D.O.K. It’s also not his first time playing a Green Lantern — Fillion voiced the Hal Jordan incarnation of the character in DC’s animated films.

The actor has built up a solid fanbase, and they’ve been wanting him to play a superhero for a long, long time. Well, it looks like they’ve finally got their chance, and with Gunn at the helm (someone who Fillion obviously works well with), Fillion’s sure to knock it out of the park.
