US House representative Ilhan Omar called Elon Musk “one of the dumbest people on earth” after he shared a conspiracy theory about her on social media. The harsh response came after Musk made false claims about Omar and her Minnesota district.
The argument started on Monday, January 12, on X. It began when Musk seemed to agree with a post claiming that undocumented immigrants are being encouraged to come to the US so Democrats can win elections.
Musk responded to that baseless claim by saying Minnesota Representative Omar was proof of this happening, according to Indy100. Omar is a Somali-born US citizen who has served her district since 2019.
Musk’s immigrant conspiracy theory doesn’t hold up to basic facts
Musk, who was born in South Africa and is himself an immigrant to the US, claimed this has been going on for years. He said that a large number of recently arrived Somalis will only elect a Somali person to Congress in Omar’s Minnesota district.
He also suggested that similar things are happening in other parts of America, though he called it “more subtle” in those areas. Musk’s comments tried to paint Omar’s election as part of a scheme involving immigration.
Omar quickly fired back at Musk’s claims, calling them “conspiracy theories” that are “laughable.” She pointed out that her district is actually mostly white, which directly contradicts what Musk said. This isn’t the first time Musk’s platform has sparked controversy.
In her response, Omar wrote that Musk’s conspiracy theories have no place in a society that cares about facts. She made it clear that his claims about her district were completely wrong.
Many people in the comments used X’s AI bot Grok to fact-check Musk’s statement. The bot showed that only about 6-7% of Omar’s district is of Somali descent, which isn’t enough by itself to ensure Democratic wins. However, Musk’s Grok has faced serious criticism before for generating inappropriate content.
