Pennsylvania woman spends Wednesday afternoon going through Goodwill racks – because everything she pulled was already hers: ‘I was so mad’

Only the garbage bags were meant to be donated.

TikToker Abby recently found herself hunting through a Goodwill store in Pennsylvania to recover what she says were her clothes. In a video with over 4.6 million views, you can see her sorting through the store racks. As she pulls items off the hangers, she says, “This is mine!” while the on-screen text in the TikTok post clarifies the situation: “Spent my Wednesday afternoon searching the Goodwill for the bin of clothes my mom donated that were all my winter clothes that weren’t for donation.”

The tension in the video is palpable, especially when Abby shows her mom a specific sweater and says, “This is the sweater you told me I never wear.” Her mom’s reaction is one of visible shock. The situation only gets more heated as they walk out to the car. Abby tells her mom, “You’re lucky they let me take my stuff,” leading to an argument where the mother retorts, “You’re lucky..” Abby quickly cuts in, “NO! You’re lucky.”

When the mother mentions something about the creator paying for the items, Abby points out that the mother would have been the one to pay if they had been required to do so. The mother snaps back, “You said all of this stuff was going to the Goodwill,” but Abby firmly disagrees: “I Never said that! All the ones I said were for the goodwill were in garbage bags; you should have known that.”

It all stemmed from a miscommunication

In a follow-up video, Abby provided the full alleged story behind this chaotic afternoon. She explained that she noticed her prom dress on the back of the couch and asked her mom why it was there. Her mom claimed it was because she was getting rid of it, but Abby realized it was actually part of a bin of winter clothes that were supposed to go into the attic.

She had left the bin in the hallway next to two other bags that were actually meant for donation. Because the local donation boxes were already, as she put it, “stuff to the gills,” she didn’t want to leave her belongings out in the rain where they would end up in a dump. Her mom, tired of seeing the bin in the hallway, took it to Goodwill herself.

Abby shared the stressful process of tracking the items down. She says she contacted the store, but was told they didn’t have it, and it was likely on a truck to the warehouse. She then called the warehouse, where staff searched for the specific under-bed storage container. Once they arrived at the store, she was able to recover her items. She noted, “It’s literally, like, it’s literally all of my stuff because all of the tags are all yellow tags, and that was, like, the color.”

According to Goodwill’s return policy, they receive hundreds of thousands of donations annually, and occasionally, items are donated by accident. They make every effort to return items donated by mistake, but because their staff is often able to process and place items for sale in less than 24 hours, speed is critical. If you ever find yourself in this situation, they highly encourage contacting them as soon as possible with specific details and photos.

The comment section on her original video was flooded with reactions. Nana asked, “Why is she mad at you?” while Cloeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee inquired, “omg did u have to pay for it all back.” Others were more skeptical of the mother’s motives, with Baby_Foster_Kittens saying, “I’m gonna hold your hand when I tell you this….she knew.”

Another shared a similar experience, saying, “she absolutely did that on purpose. my mom donated some sentimental toys when I was 14 without realizing, when I cried bc they were missing she RAN to goodwill right away and was able to find them all and profusely apologized.” One commentator suggested petty revenge, writing, “Time to donate all of mom’s favourite dresses and jewellery. Based on the attitude, seems like it was on purpose.”

Abby eventually urged viewers to be kind to her mother, insisting it was just a mistake. One TikToker seemed to have come across one such mistake recently when she stumbled across family photographs. When she took a closer look, she realized they were photos of a major music star. For many shoppers, thrift shops like Goodwill can and have been treasure mines. For instance, a shopper bought a piggy bank, only to find that it was filled with cash
