‘That’s crazy’: Florida woman signed up for key lime pie. The hostess’s expensive taste made her regret the offer instantly

For that price, it "had better clean my house."

A Florida woman’s dinner-party contribution turned into a viral TikTok moment after she revealed the jaw-dropping price of a single dessert request: $95 key lime pie.

TikTok creator Elise (@bocarealtalk) shared the story. Elise explained that she had agreed to bring dessert to a dinner party in Boca Raton, thinking it was a simple, polite gesture. That is, until the hostess specified exactly where the pie needed to come from. “Going to a dinner party this evening in Boca Raton, and the hostess requested a key lime pie.” But not just any key lime pie: a key lime pie from the upscale local restaurant Luff’s Fish House.

She said, “Fine, it’s my pleasure. You’re hosting. And have you ever in your effing life heard of a key lime pie that cost $95? Well, I just did.”

Elise’s outraged post struck a chord with many. Some were familiar with South Florida’s upscale food scene but still considered the price excessive for a dessert traditionally made with just a handful of ingredients.

“Literally 4 ingredients”

Key lime pie, a Florida staple, is typically made from condensed milk, egg yolks, key lime juice, and a graham cracker crust. That simple key lime pie recipe became a major talking point in the comment section.“Key lime pie is literally 4 ingredients. $95 is insane,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Just made one, cost me $5.”

Others focused less on the price and more on what they saw as an unusual request from a hostess. “HELL NO..and rude of her to ask! Through the years when I’ve had parties at my home I’ve never asked anyone to bring anything! When I’ve been invited to parties I’ve never been asked to bring anything either but always brought a Hostess gift😉”

She ranked the pie “mid”

I’m giving you the rating of the $95 Keylime pie from Boca Raton. This is an honest review.

But the story didn’t end with the purchase. After what she said were hundreds of texts from curious friends and followers asking how the famously expensive pie actually tasted, Elise posted a follow-up review.

“For all of you who wanna know how that 95-dollar key lime pie was, I’m here to tell you. Out of one. Out of ten. Done. Drum roll. Six and a half. Maybe a seven.” She called it “sweet” when key lime pie should be tart, and reiterated it was her pleasure to bring the pie to the party, and added, “It wasn’t horrible.”

Her lukewarm review only fueled the viral reaction. For many viewers, the idea that a nearly $100 dessert could score a “six and a half” felt like the ultimate punchline.

The clips have since circulated beyond TikTok, with viewers debating whether the pie’s price could ever be justified by quality, brand reputation, or location. Others saw it as a snapshot of Boca Raton’s luxury culture, where premium pricing can be part of the experience. One comment said, “For $95, that pie better also clean my house. 😂😂”

Still, for Elise, the moment seemed less about the money and more about the surprise of the situation. What started as a polite offer to bring dessert turned into an internet-wide discussion about hospitality, expectations, and how much is too much to spend on a pie — even in South Florida.
