We’re diving into some wild news coming out of Minneapolis. It sounds like the ongoing battle against federal immigration enforcement is way more coordinated than we thought. The head of the local teachers union, Marcia Howard, just dropped a major admission, revealing that elected officials and even “our bosses” aren’t just sympathetic to anti-ICE activity, they’re actively involved.
According to the Fox News report, Howard, who serves as president of the Minneapolis Federation of Educators, sounded really proud of the work being done to coordinate against law enforcement. She said that people are “actively engaged in ICE watch, in being vigilant in protecting our neighbors, in Signal chat groups, running plates, in their cars doing patrols.” Howard stated that they weren’t ashamed of it.
She made it crystal clear just how deep the coordination goes, too. “Our bosses are in the Signal chats with us,” she confirmed, adding, “Our elected officials are in the chats with us.” That’s a huge statement showing just how strongly leadership feels about federal operations in the state.
I find that level of coordination pretty impressive
If you don’t know who Marcia Howard is, you definitely should. She leads the Minneapolis Federation of Educators and has a long history in the city. In addition to being an English teacher for 25 years, she played a prominent role during the 2020 riots in the city following George Floyd’s death. Howard is even described as a “steward” of the George Floyd Square memorial area. She meets with local activists there every single morning.
Howard says this effort isn’t limited to just politicians and activists, though. She claims this pushback is a massive community effort. “Everybody that’s anybody is doing the work of protecting our neighbors, because that’s how we show up in Minneapolis and St. Paul,” she insisted.
She named local “nanas,” hockey coaches, and soccer moms as participants in the effort against federal immigration enforcement, which is trying to arrest illegal aliens, many of whom reportedly have criminal histories in the United States. Teachers are “armed with whistles and our phones,” making sure kids get to class without incident. Now, US Olympians have been stepping forward to speak for their home state too.
Howard stated that the federal officers “declared war on my state, they have declared war in my city” and alleged that the agents brought to the Twin Cities were “hapless, untrained, overly-militarized.” She even made some aggressive, impassioned comparisons, equating the federal officers to slave catchers and the Ku Klux Klan. It’s charged language but it shows you how serious this fight against federal law enforcement has become in Minneapolis.
