Olympian’s post-games euphoria crumbles as airport staff deliver a shocking welcome home, leaving her in tears

Olympic glow fades fast at the airport.

British-Spanish figure skater Olivia Smart broke down in tears at Milan airport after the Winter Olympics, saying rude staff had upset her. Her video about the incident went viral, but not in the way she expected, as many viewers pushed back against her. She later came forward to clarify her feelings, pointing to “Post-Olympics Depression” as the real reason behind her emotional state.

According to Brobible, Smart, wearing her Olympic lanyard and a USA beanie, posted a video with tears in her eyes. The on-screen text, which got over 2.6 million views, read, “When you go back to real life after the Olympics ends and workers at the airport are SO rude to you.” She added in the caption, “Apparently we’re only special during the dates between February 6th-22nd.”

Many viewers online were not sympathetic and felt she was looking for special treatment. One commenter wrote, “It’s the hat.” Another remarked, “Dont think to many people are that bothered about the Olympics sorry.”

Post-Olympics Depression is a real and serious issue that many athletes go through

However, some viewers defended Smart, saying no one deserves rude treatment regardless of who they are. One person commented, “You are always an Olympian and don’t let grumpy people get you down. You are an amazing and gifted person.”

Another said, “If it’s the TSA you’re not in an exclusive group. They’re rude to everyone 🤷🏻‍♂️.” Airports can indeed be stressful environments, and dangerous incidents at airports involving staff and passengers are not unheard of.

After her 7-hour flight, Smart saw the criticism and made a follow-up video to clarify that she does not expect special treatment. She explained that her emotions were running high due to Post-Olympics Depression. She said, “Post Olympics depression and emotions are SO real and mine were especially high when boarding my extremely early flight to officially leave the Olympics here in Milan.”

The end of the Olympics means an abrupt stop to months or even years of intense training and preparation. Athletes then have to mentally prepare for another four-year cycle of hard work. This year’s Winter Olympics also saw violent protests over environmental and ice concerns add to the tension surrounding the games. A 2023 study found that 27% of Danish Olympians and Paralympians reported experiencing moderate-to-severe depression during this period.

Once Smart explained the emotional toll of the post-Olympics period, viewers became far more understanding. One person said, “totally get that you’ve won a medal for your country but not every where you go are people going to treat you like royalty.”
