Donald Trump seems dead set on starting beef with every country on earth. The president has already dragged his own country into war but he’s not stopping there as he now has Spain in his sights. The concerning development comes after the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, refused to allow American jets use of their bases to conduct strikes on Iran.
Sánchez earned the ire of Trump this week after defying the U.S. president and saying “no” to war. The PM stated that Spain “will not be vassals” to another country according to Reuters. The message was clear: they had no desire to be involved in the conflict.
Of course, Spain’s refusal to bend the knee to Trump’s wishes no doubt hurt the president’s feelings, after all, we know Trump doesn’t like the word “no.” Speaking from the White House, Trump had some rather unkind and vaguely threatening words to say about the European country. “Spain has been terrible,” he told reporters.
When talking about the fact that Spain wasn’t letting the U.S. use their bases Trump stated, “We could use their base if we want. We could just fly in & use it. Nobody’s going to tell us not to use it.”
The sheer audacity and arrogance of the president has certainly rubbed many the wrong way. When it comes to the delicate art of maintaining international relationships Donald Trump is like a bull in a china shop, at this rate he’ll make enemies of every country before his term is over.
Trump is mad at Spain
As well as the apparent threats made against the country, Trump also threatened a trade embargo against Spain. If he were to follow through on his reckless plan it could see all trade between the U.S. and Spain brought to a halt until Trump either backs down or gets his way. Right now it’s not clear whether the Trump administration actually intends to actually follow through on the threat but knowing how idiotic the president is there’s a real possibility.
Trump also expressed frustration with the country for refusing to increase its defense budget by 5% of its GDP, something which many other countries in Europe have already done.
The U.S. involvement in the Middle East has divided Europe with some countries such as the U.K. allowing the military to use its bases to conduct strikes against Iran. Thankfully, the Spanish Prime Minister seems to be one of the few leaders with a backbone who won’t let themselves be pushed around by the bully that is Donald Trump.
