Trump promised Oil money, so his minion used emergency powers to restart disastrous oil spill pipeline

Another attempt by the Administration to force compliance so that Trump gets what he wants.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright just issued a directive, paving the way for a company to restart an oil pipeline off the California coast that state officials have kept offline since 2015. The Energy Department stated that this is a way to reduce our reliance on oil imports that come through the Strait of Hormuz. International concern is so high that an inaccurate tweet from Wright caused the market to spiral.

According to Politico, President Donald Trump delegated some of his authority under the Defense Production Act to Wright. It is a 1950 law that gives the president power over the domestic industry when it comes to national defense.

The department’s announcement stated that “more than 60 percent of the oil refined in California comes from overseas, with a significant share traveling through the Strait of Hormuz — presenting serious national security threats.” Wright himself added that this step would “strengthen America’s oil supply and restore a pipeline system vital to our national security and defense, ensuring that West Coast military installations have the reliable energy critical to military readiness.”

It just looks like a way to force California to comply

California Governor Gavin Newsom slammed back at the reasoning: “Donald Trump started a war, admitted it would spike gas prices nationwide, told Americans it was a small price to pay, and now he’s using this crisis of his own making to attempt what he’s wanted to do for years: open California’s coast for his oil industry friends so they can poison our beaches.”

He called the attempt to restart the pipeline illegal and pointed out that it “wouldn’t lower prices by a cent” since oil prices are set on the global marketplace. Wright’s directive overrides California’s authority over this pipeline system, an escalation of the ongoing conflict between the federal government and California about drilling rights off the coast.

The pipeline owner, Sable Offshore Corp., had already appealed to Trump’s National Energy Dominance Council for help to bypass state regulators. According to experts, bringing Sable’s oil to market won’t offset the supply disruptions caused by the war in Iran. The oil will be a more profitable supply for Golden State refiners, but “we shouldn’t expect that to really flow through to consumers in any meaningful way in California, and certainly not in the United States.”

This pipeline system has been shut since a major 2015 oil spill, with state and local agencies blocking any attempts to restart operations, mostly by citing environmental violations. Recently,  California Attorney General Rob Bonta sued the U.S. Transportation Department over its move to assert jurisdiction over Sable’s pipelines

Newsom made it very clear that “California will not stand by while the Trump administration attempts to sacrifice our coastal communities, our environment, and our $51 billion coastal economy.” He added, “The Trump administration and Sable are defying multiple court orders, and we will see them back in court.”
