California Governor Gavin Newsom has called out President Donald Trump‘s golfing costs, pointing out that it has already cost American taxpayers over $100 million during his second term. This figure is already two-thirds of the total $151.5 million spent on presidential golf during Trump’s entire first term.
According to The Daily Beast, Newsom’s press office stated, “$100 million – not spent on food assistance, health care, housing, or veterans. Just golf!” The Democratic governor has been a vocal critic of the president, often pointing out what he sees as a serious lack of priorities.
At 79 years old, President Trump is on track to spend $300 million of taxpayer funds on golf by the end of his second term. Just 14 months into his current term, he has already made 110 visits to golf courses, including on weekends, since launching the war against Iran.
Trump’s continued golfing stands in sharp contrast to the human and economic costs of the Iran war
The conflict in Iran began on February 28 and has so far claimed the lives of 13 American service members, while close to 2,000 people have died in Iran. President Trump addressed the nation on March 1, saying “there will likely be more” Americans who die as the conflict continues.
Thousands of American troops, including elite rapid-response units from the 82nd Airborne Division, have been deployed to the Middle East in preparation for what is expected to be a weeks-long ground assault. Trump’s handling of the war has added to growing uncertainty around his decision-making, and Wall Street has even built an index to track Trump’s unpredictability.
The war has also had a direct impact on everyday Americans at home. Gas prices have risen sharply since Iran shut down the Strait of Hormuz on March 2, halting daily oil traffic through this critical trade route.
The average price for a gallon of gas has risen to $3.96 – more than a dollar higher than the pre-war average. Newsom has continued to pressure Trump throughout his second term, using X as a platform for his criticism.
He recently targeted the White House’s “OnlyFarms” website, a parody of the adult content platform OnlyFans, writing, “The White House spent more time launching a parody porn website than lowering your gas prices this week.” Meanwhile, tensions within the administration have also been making headlines, as Trump was recently reported to have called his own inner circle losers.
