It was all supposed to get better when Donald Trump returned to the White House!
Trump spent the 2024 campaign insisting that there would be “no new wars” if he won, that gas prices would plummet, that groceries would cost less, that he’d expose corrupt and powerful pedophiles, that the economy would be turbocharged, and that, finally, the world would respect the United States once again.
As you may have noticed, the exact opposite has happened. Trump has now plunged the United States into another disastrous war in the Middle East that’s not going well. As it turns out, needlessly attacking a nation that can seriously disrupt the oil industry wasn’t such a hot idea.
Now the average price of gas at the pump in the United States has topped $4 a gallon ($4.02 to be precise), a rise of more than a dollar, or 25%, since Trump’s war began. Diesel isn’t faring much better and is currently arond $1.70 higher.
Now Hakeem Jeffries is here with a simple message for Americans:
Gas is over $4 a gallon.
— Hakeem Jeffries (@RepJeffries) March 31, 2026
Donald Trump’s reckless war of choice is making your life more expensive.
You deserve better.
“Gas is over $4 a gallon. Donald Trump’s reckless war of choice is making your life more expensive. You deserve better.”
“You deserve better.”
Even the most adamant MAGA-hat-wearing Trump purist may reconsider their allegiances after arriving at the pumps and seeing how much it’s going to cost to fill their tank. Also, the price of oil affects the price of every product that needs to be transported, so expect prices to rise rapidly across the board for groceries and consumer goods.
You might bleat that gas prices were also high under Joe Biden. However, this was primarily a consequence of Russia’s war with Ukraine, so an external factor that Biden couldn’t fully control. The difference here is that Trump (egged on by Netanyahu) decided to wage war on Iran, meaning he bears sole responsibility for what’s happening at the pumps.
This rather obvious fact hasn’t escaped regular Americans, and many of you will have already seen stickers on the pumps of Trump pointing, captioned “I did that!”.
Trump’s own response was to casually dismiss skyrocketing gas prices as no big deal. A reporter informed him of the milestone in an interview in the Oval Office:
Reporter: Today, gas prices hit $4
— Acyn (@Acyn) March 31, 2026
Trump: Yeah, it hit $4 and we’re not going to have a country throwing nuclear weapons at us.
Reporter: Americans are feeling the effects
Trump: They’re also feeling a lot safer pic.twitter.com/qL9eNW6ZyS
“Yeah, it hit $4 yeah and we have a country that’s not going to be throwing a nuclear weapon at us in six months.”
The reporter pointed out that Americans are feeling the effects. Trump responded:
“They’re also feeling a lot safer.”
Are you feeling a lot safer? We can only underline once again that Iran not only didn’t have a nuclear weapon, but that the vast majority of experts agree that they weren’t remotely close to developing one. And, even if they were, Trump himself confidently stated he’d “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear facilities last year!
The reality is that things are only going to get worse. Trump himself is vowing to destroy Iran’s oil wells and facilities and, if he does so, expect this oil crisis to snowball into a full-on disaster.
Practically every economist is warning that gas prices are going to get higher still, raising the specter of a situation similar to the early 70s in which there were queues for the pumps, fights at gas stations, people caught siphoning gas from cars, and even occasional tanker hijackings.
The midterms are looming, so if the predictions are right and America enters a genuine crisis over gas, even the most die-hard MAGA maniac might have to admit they’ve backed the wrong horse as they realize they can’t even afford to run an automobile anymore. They may not then rush to vote Democrat, but they’re certainly not going to be enthusiastically voting for Trump’s candidates!
