‘What is this, an ‘SNL’ skit?’: Fans loved the ridiculous reason Kanye West stopped his comeback concert 4 times

Everything needed to be just right for Ye.

Kanye West brought his comeback concert to a sudden halt four times in Los Angeles recently, all because the lighting during his performance wasn’t quite hitting the right vibe. It was a huge night for Ye, marking his first show in Tinseltown in five years, and the stadium was absolutely packed with fans ready to hear his biggest hits.

The atmosphere was electric, and everyone was clearly thrilled to see him back. Then things took an unexpected turn during his 2007 track, Good Life, when Ye abruptly stopped mid-song. He directly addressed the production crew, voicing his displeasure with the disco-style lighting, explaining that it just didn’t mesh well with the smoke-filled stage he had envisioned. He wanted it gone, plain and simple.

Per TMZ, after a brief pause, Ye restarted the song from the very top, but it wasn’t long before he pulled the plug again. This time, the lights were “corny.” I assume that the crowd was probably feeling a mix of confusion and amusement. It’s a bold move to stop a massive stadium show over lighting, but that’s just how Ye rolls when it comes to his artistic vision.

Honestly, this seems ridiculously on par for him and his search for perfection

The third attempt was a failure too, with Ye once again halting the performance to ask, “What is this, an ‘SNL’ skit?” He then told the crew, “Stop doing the vibrating, Vegas lights, bro.” He even pointed out that this specific issue had already come up during rehearsals, implying that the production team should have had it sorted out beforehand.

Finally, on the fourth try, they managed to get the lighting to his satisfaction, and the show continued. His fans, incredibly, seemed to eat it up, enjoying the raw, unscripted moment.

Now, concert production is a complex affair, that highly depends on an intricate level of planning and execution. According to DJ Zeke Worldwide, a multimedia enterprise specializing in live shows, bringing a live music event to life isn’t just about the artist showing up, and requires extensive technical setup.

This is where I have my doubts about this moment in Kanye’s concert. The team does a lot of pre-production to lay the groundwork. Outside of the venue and budget, here is where they figure out the artist’s vision and plan for it. It is where they set the technical requirements, including the lighting requirements, to meet the artist’s aesthetic.

Then the team moves on to the stage design and technical setup, which is precisely where Kanye’s complaints fit in. Set designers, lighting technicians, and audio designers work together with the artists to create the final experience. A big part of that is test runs with the artist. Kanye mentioning it means it happened, so the question then is, why didn’t it get fixed? Especially when the concert team’s jobs are on the line.

My inane observations aside, beyond the lighting drama, Kanye’s concert was still packed with exciting moments. He had a handful of surprise guests join him on stage. Don Toliver made an appearance, and, even more exciting, his daughter, North, performed TALKING and her original song PIERCING ON MY HAND

Kanye has been absent from the music scene for a while. Instead, he went on a rather alarming personality tangent, filled with more than a few negative viral moments. He came out as an ardent Trump supporter, went on a few antisemitic rants, threw his support behind abusers, and then even begged for the release of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. I personally watched it all with a fair amount of fascinated horror.

Recently, though, he seems to have had some realizations. Or he was preparing for his comeback, so he issued an apology for his very public unraveling over the last few years. Now, he is on his tour, and you can bet that the production team will be double-checking those lights.
