Iran must be breathing a huge sigh of relief. The United States and Israel’s war was in its third month, thousands were dead, and last night Donald Trump was threatening that their “whole civilization would die tonight“.
At the beginning of the war, Trump’s plan appeared to be a quick decapitation strike against the Iranian leadership, then telling Iranians that the “hour of their freedom is at hand“, hoping that they would overthrow the government.
Whoever sold him that line has some serious questions to answer, as while Ayatollah Khamenei was indeed killed, the war appears to have only unified regular Iranians against the “Great Satan” of America.
And so, in the face of overwhelming U.S. military superiority, Iran stood firm. They refused to bend the knee to Trump, and used every last molecule of leverage they had against him. A ceasefire has now been provisionally agreed, with Iran apparently set to get sanctions against them lifted, the right to charge ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, and “a guarantee that Iran will not be attacked again.”
THEY CELEBRATE IN IRAN..

As such, it’s perhaps no surprise that the citizens of Tehran, no doubt frazzled and exhausted after weeks of bombardment, erupted onto the streets to claim victory over Trump:

Iran ecstatic, Israel despondent
Reports indicate crowds gathering in the capital, cheering, waving flags, singing victory songs, and celebrating a David and Goliath-style defeat of America that will only strengthen patriotic support for the Islamic regime:
BREAKING: IRAN CELEBRATES!

Pakistan appears to be picking up specific praise from Iranians for its role in facilitating the ceasefire, with Pakistani flags waved alongside their own in triumph.
Now, you might say that Iranians are celebrating prematurely. After all, this is merely a two-week conditional ceasefire, and while Trump has provisionally accepted Iran’s ten demands, nothing has been agreed. However, it’s clear that Trump is desperate to get out of this nightmare as quickly as he can, and even a humiliating off-ramp is still an off-ramp.
If you want the flipside of the Iranian jubilation, look no further than Yair Lapid, former prime minister of Israel and current leader of the opposition. His take on the situation?
לא היה אסון מדיני כזה בכל תולדותינו. ישראל לא היתה אפילו ליד השולחן כשנעשו החלטות הנוגעות לליבת הבטחון הלאומי שלנו.
— יאיר לפיד – Yair Lapid (@yairlapid) April 8, 2026
“There has never been such a political disaster in all of our history. Israel wasn’t even at the table when decisions were made concerning the core of our national security. The military carried out everything that was asked of it, the public demonstrated amazing resilience, but Netanyahu failed politically, failed strategically, and didn’t meet a single one of the goals that he himself set. It will take us years to repair the political and strategic damage that Netanyahu wrought due to arrogance, negligence, and a lack of strategic planning.” (Via X translation)
As for Trump? He’s probably concluded that he can just keep lying that this is a crushing victory for America, and if he does that long enough, enough people will believe him. But, frankly, having achieved none of his military goals, even MAGA may begin to call him “TACO Trump” from now on.
