Tennessee woman hears voices in kitchen, begins wondering if her dishwasher is possessed

The dishwasher was listening in.

It is not every day that you expect random household appliances to start broadcasting radio programs, but that is exactly what happened to one Tennessee woman.

Ali Perkins recently went viral on TikTok, with 4.8 million views,  after sharing a video documenting the bizarre experience of hearing voices coming directly from her kitchen dishwasher. It is a quirk that, thanks to an unusual phenomenon, can transform an ordinary appliance into an unintended antenna.

Per People Magazine, Perkins first noticed the issue when she heard faint, mysterious voices while walking through her home. At first, she could not pinpoint the source, leading her to investigate her own kitchen in a frantic search. She even checked her crawlspace to ensure no one was hiding there. The mystery finally cleared up when she had her dishwasher open and realized the sound was coming from the machine itself, and that it was a radio broadcast.

No this isn’t a prank or AI. Who do i call? I already had an electrician come over and he’s stumped.

In her video, she asked for help understanding why her appliance had suddenly become a radio receiver, and the internet delivered. One user, who said they’re an engineer, explained that if the length of a power cord or internal wiring matches a harmonic of a radio frequency, it can effectively act as an antenna. Many modern dishwashers include small speakers for chimes and beeps, and in this case, that speaker was likely broadcasting the signal.

What a spooky hardware glitch

This phenomenon is known as Radio Frequency Interference, or RFI. According to Cambridge Radio Frequency Systems, it’s essentially unwanted energy in a given frequency caused by factors like stray emissions, radiation, or even just overcrowded bands.

While we usually think of RFI affecting things like Wi-Fi or cellular signals, it can absolutely impact household appliances. When a device has loose or ungrounded wiring or if there is a breakdown in internal shielding, these metal components can inadvertently receive radio signals and convert them into audible sound waves.

Perkins later provided an update on TikTok regarding her attempts to resolve the issue. She mentioned that she had called an electrician who was completely stumped, noting it was the craziest thing he had ever seen. While he did not have an immediate fix, Perkins plans to share the insights she gathered from the online community with him in hopes of finding a permanent solution.

For those curious about the science, RFI can be caused by everything from solar flares and lightning to illegal jammers or even just leaking wired transmissions. Because it can be natural or manmade, and constant or intermittent, it is often a challenge to identify the root cause.

Calling all radio nerds! Please tell me how to get my dishwasher to stop picking up on a radio station. It was cool for a second but now I need it gone haha. #radio #mydishwasherisspeakingtome

In industrial or safety-critical environments, experts use persistent spectrum monitoring and specialized sensors to detect these signals. For a home dishwasher, the solution is localized.

Adding a filter, such as a low-pass or high-pass filter, can help attenuate those unwanted frequencies. Similarly, improving the shielding around sensitive components using metal enclosures or conductive coatings can stop the interference from entering the device in the first place.

Dishwasher went viral and now i feel like i need to answer all your questions but i couldn’t keep up! If anyone knows how i can change the channel ill keep it. 😂 #talkingdishwasher

If you ever find yourself in a similar spot, it is good to know that you are not losing your mind. It is just physics working in a way that is usually hidden from our daily lives.

While some commenters on the video shared jokes about changing the radio station by moving their forks, others shared their own experiences. One person mentioned hearing radio signals through their camping tent poles, proving that Perkins is not alone in this strange experience.

It is a great reminder that our modern world is filled with invisible signals, and sometimes, the technology we rely on just happens to tune into the wrong one. Hopefully, Perkins gets her dishwasher sorted out soon, so she can go back to using it for dishes instead of catching the morning news.

Perkins must have been gratified to know that she wasn’t going crazy, and hey, at least her dishwasher wasn’t going rogue, like Alexa.
