A chance meeting in a hostel elevator in Japan has completely changed how Chicago tech worker Freddy Fang views his own life. The 26-year-old creator, who shares content under the handle @freddymightdoit, posted a video on TikTok detailing his experience. The clip has already hit 3.1 million views, and it’s easy to see why it resonates with so many of us who are trying to balance the grind with actual living.
It all started with a five-second interaction. Fang was staying at a hostel in Kyoto when he bumped into a fellow traveler in an elevator. They were staying on the same floor, exchanged Instagram accounts, and tentatively planned a dinner. It is the kind of fleeting moment that usually goes nowhere. As Fang noted, they had barely spent four minutes in each other’s company before they actually sat down for their meal at a small sushi restaurant.
Per Newsweek, the plan almost failed to materialize until they ran into each other at the entrance and spontaneously solidified their plans. At the restaurant, the conversation shifted from small talk to something much deeper. Fang mentioned that they were both grappling with their sense of purpose. The stranger, who is from Switzerland, explained that he had quit his previous job to pursue a lifestyle that allows him to travel to a new location every month.
Props to Fang, because I am horrible with strangers
This hit home for Fang, who realized he had not traveled abroad since 2023 because he was too focused on his career. Fang wrote in his TikTok caption that he had spent years working hard and skipping trips, all while spending money on meaningless things that left him feeling unfulfilled. He admitted, “I messed up big time.”
Fang reflected on how the conversation moved quickly into their values and life philosophies. For him, the most life-changing part of the experience was the reminder that human connection and deep conversations are what truly drive his fulfillment. Additionally, dining together kept them from being kicked out for being solo travellers.
TikTokers came out in droves to join the discussion, providing some poignant observations and sharing similar stories. User Jairo provided some advice: “There is nothing like ‘living my life wrong’. Everyone lives their life as they need, everyone has different rhythms.”
Meechandchong shared a story about making a new best friend. “That’s awesome! I met one of my best friends when she randomly came up to me in Times Square and we decided to get lunch together.” Of course, some travel trips lead to accidental separations too.

User somebody.that.scrolls summarized it best: “If you had met him 3.5 years earlier, the conversation wouldve felt/hit different. In those 3.5 years you have still learned a lot about life. Sometimes you need to know and experience what you dont want for a while before you know you dont want it, or before you know what you actually do want. Everything is valuable”
