As dating apps like Tinder continue to experiment with identity and safety features, including photo verification and optional background checks, users still report frequent misrepresentation, especially regarding height and appearance.
One of the most common online dating complaints involves “catfishing,” where someone presents a false identity or heavily altered images to attract matches. Another internet subculture now influencing dating expectations is “looksmaxing,” a term used online to describe efforts to maximize physical attractiveness through grooming, fitness, and sometimes extreme or pseudoscientific facial analysis.
Critics say the community can drift into obsessive or misleading standards of beauty. Looksmaxing has also become increasingly visible on platforms like TikTok, where creators share transformation advice and “glow-up” routines.
Introducing “catfish maxing”
Against that backdrop, a Miami woman’s viral TikTok story is gaining traction after she described a date that she says turned into a “catfish maxing” experience with a self-described looksmaxer. The video, posted by Choppedanduncbutfree and viewed more than 3 million times, has sparked widespread discussion about authenticity in online dating.
In the TikTok “get ready with me” story, the creator explains that she matched with a man on Tinder’s double date feature and stayed in contact over Snapchat for roughly six months. During that time, she said she occasionally saw him through FaceTime and his TikTok account, where he posted looksmaxing content, including advice videos and “thirst traps.”
“He kept asking me out, like on dates and stuff, but I just really DGAF,” she said, explaining she eventually agreed to meet for ramen while bored. The man reportedly lived in Fort Lauderdale while she was based in Miami, about an hour apart.
From the start, she says expectations did not match reality. She claims he arrived after a long drive, saying he was 6-foot-3, but appeared significantly shorter in person. She estimated his height closer to 5-foot-6.
She also described an awkward car ride filled with loud music and silence before they arrived at a ramen restaurant in downtown Miami. Once inside, she said the man repeatedly used looksmaxing slang, describing himself and others as “maxing” in different categories.
“He’s like, ‘I’m this maxing, I’m that maxing,’” she said, adding that the terminology quickly became frustrating.
The woman also alleged that during the meal, he began analyzing her facial structure using looksmaxing terms she did not understand, including comments about her “maxilla,” a real anatomical term referring to the upper jaw bone.
Things got even worse from there
According to her account, the date continued with more awkward exchanges, including him taking photos and posting content while they were still sitting together. She described the experience as uncomfortable and confusing, especially as he asked, “How does it feel to go out on a date with a TikToker?”
At the end of the night, she declined to invite him inside her apartment. She later said he sent her a long message offering unsolicited appearance advice.
The woman ended her viral story by joking that she ultimately used the experience for free ramen and sent him a link to “hype boosters” on Amazon.
