A Cincinnati man recently found himself in a truly uncomfortable situation when a mysterious liquid began pouring from the ceiling of his United Airlines flight. Kevin Glover, a 39-year-old IT system administrator, was traveling from Houston to Chicago on April 26 when the incident occurred. The experience, shared on his Instagram, left him frustrated and embarrassed as he endured repeated soakings.
Per People, the issue began before the aircraft even pushed back from the gate. Glover initially noticed a small drip and assumed it was related to his earphones, but the situation quickly escalated. As the plane moved, what felt like a “string of water” fell on him. He hit the call button, but a flight attendant only arrived to assist after they were in the air. The only solution offered at the time was a few paper towels.
About 30 minutes after the first dousing, a much larger stream of liquid drenched him again, even splashing onto his neighbors. A flight attendant checked the overhead bin for a source but found nothing. She suggested that it might have been air cabin condensation. He asked to be moved, but they did not agree, even though there were empty seats available.
It is concerning that this was their only fix for an almost 3-hour flight
The crew attempted to stop the flow by stuffing napkins into the gaps in the ceiling, but that only delayed the inevitable. About 20 minutes before landing, the liquid released in a 20-second pour.
“I was soaked from head to undies LITERALLY,” Glover wrote in his Instagram caption. “I was not moved but given a few paper towels and YES on my entire flight I was soaked several times.” Even his phone was doused during the final, heavy pour.
Glover reported that he was quite concerned about the potential health risks associated with the unidentified fluid. When the flight arrived in Chicago, Glover waited for the other passengers to exit to talk to the crew.
However, it was still humiliating as he walked up the jet bridge in his wet clothes while other travelers watched and filmed him. A gate agent ultimately instructed him to file a complaint online, leaving him to deal with the aftermath on his own.
The situation gained significant attention after Glover posted a video of the leak online, which eventually gathered nearly nine million views. In the days following the flight, United Airlines reached out to offer a $167 refund for that leg of the trip or a digital flight credit.
Glover declined this offer because he felt it was insufficient, noting that he had already accepted some miles while on the plane. “They don’t care, I’m just a little guy,” he says. “That’s a Band-Aid on a war wound.”
Glover is now looking for a full refund for his entire trip and additional flight credits. Beyond his own experience, he hopes to bring attention to how passengers are treated when things go wrong.
He believes that airlines should prioritize consistent and fair treatment for everyone on board, regardless of the situation. While he did not expect his story to reach so many people, he is determined to advocate for better standards in air travel.
