Researchers have studied dreams about deceased loved ones, calling them part of grief, memory, and emotional processing. A TikTok user named Piper (@piperpoorhani) recently shared her account of a dream involving her late father. She said the experience left her with a message she could not forget: “You weren’t supposed to ask that.”
In a June 2026 TikTok post, Piper described what she called the “creepiest dream” she had experienced recently. According to text displayed on her video, she said she was shopping with her father, who died three years earlier. She realized something seemed impossible.
Piper said she asked her father, “Wait, you’re dead?” She claimed he looked at her and responded, “You weren’t supposed to ask that.” After waking up, Piper said she could only remember that one sentence from the dream. “Like what does that even mean?” she wrote in the text overlay.
Commenters linked it to “lucid dreaming.”
The video sparked discussion among viewers. One commenter wrote that it was “called lucid dreaming” and claimed, “you’re not supposed to ask them questions.”Another commenter suggested that Piper may have become aware she was dreaming, writing, “you broke the illusion and the dream collapsed,” and claimed that recognizing impossible events during a dream can cause the experience to end.
Lucid dreaming refers to a dream state in which a person becomes aware that they are dreaming while the dream continues. According to the Sleep Foundation’s overview, lucid dreamers may recognize they are dreaming and can sometimes influence aspects of the experience.
Research has explored lucid dreaming as a distinct state of consciousness during sleep. A 2021 study published in Current Biology examined whether researchers could communicate with people while they were experiencing lucid dreams. The study found that some participants who were verified to be in REM sleep could respond to questions from researchers using eye movements or facial muscle signals, providing evidence that two-way communication during lucid dreams is possible
However, scientists have not established that asking questions inside a dream causes the dream to end or “collapse.” Individual dream experiences can vary, and researchers continue to examine how awareness, emotions, and memory influence dreams.
Dreams involving deceased relatives are also a topic of psychological research. A 2014 study published in the journal APA Psy Net examined dreams of deceased loved ones and found that many participants described those dreams as meaningful experiences connected to grief and emotional adjustment.
Researchers have not concluded that these dreams represent actual contact with deceased people. Instead, studies have examined how dreams may help people process memories, emotions, and ongoing connections with someone who has died.
