Man gets his building manager to check the security cameras for a bike thief. Then he sees the person in the gray hoodie and realizes who it is

"That's worse than getting roasted."

A Reddit user thought someone had stolen his bicycle after finding his usual parking spot empty one Sunday morning. Sharing the event in a post, the user was convinced that a thief had been moving around the building, so he reportedly took to the residents’ WhatsApp group to warn his neighbors and complain about what he felt was a lack of security.

The user claimed that building management had recently asked everyone to remove their bicycles from the hallways because the floors were scheduled to be cleaned. He followed the instructions, mentioning that “I moved mine into the basement storage area late Friday night.” However, by Sunday morning, he had “completely forgot about it” and assumed the bicycle had disappeared.

Rather than checking the basement or thinking back to Friday night, he claimed that he immediately posted a warning in the group. “I was pretty pissed too, wrote this whole paragraph about how management needs to take security seriously,” the post read. His message was apparently convincing enough to get several neighbors involved. One even offered to help, while the building manager agreed to review the security cameras to find out what had happened.

That’s an embarrassing twist

The user was apparently asked to come downstairs on Monday morning to watch the footage. He expected to see someone taking his bicycle, but the video reportedly showed “a guy wearing a gray hoodie” wheeling the user’s bike “toward the basement on Friday night.”

It took him only a few seconds to recognize the person on screen. The man in the footage was seemingly wearing the same hoodie and the same slippers that he wore when taking out the trash. In other words, the suspected bike thief was none other than… himself.

The building manager reportedly “stared” at him as he tried to explain that he had simply forgotten to move his own bicycle. By then, the situation had already become bigger than a mistaken WhatsApp message. “Worst part is he’d already sent an email to residents about the reported theft, so I had to write a correction in the group and apologize for wasting everyone’s time,” the user claimed.

Unfortunately, the embarrassment didn’t end there. He professed that nobody had responded to his apology yet, adding that the silence somehow felt “worse than getting roasted.”

The mix-up is also an example of what psychologists call absent-mindedness. According to the American Psychological Association, it is one of the seven “sins of memory” and refers to “lapses of attention and forgetting to do things. This sin operates both when a memory is formed (the encoding stage) and when a memory is accessed (the retrieval stage).”

For instance, familiar tasks, such as moving a bicycle or putting something away, are often performed with little conscious attention. When people later try to recall those routine actions, they may struggle to remember the details, making it possible to overlook something they did themselves.
