A Delta Air Lines flight scheduled to fly to Atlanta was forced to return to the gate at Miami International Airport after a passenger refused to end a phone call while the flight was taxiing. The incident resulted in the disruptive passenger being removed from the aircraft and subsequently arrested by law enforcement.
A spokesperson for the airline explained to People that the customer failed to comply with repeated crew instructions to hang up her phone. The passenger’s refusal to follow safety protocols turned the situation into a disruptive ordeal, ultimately forcing the pilot to turn the aircraft around and head back to the gate.
The airline maintains a firm stance regarding safety. The Delta spokesperson stated, “The safety of our customers and crew comes before all else, and Delta has zero tolerance for disruptive behavior. We apologize to our customers for this experience and delay in their travels.” A video shared on Instagram shows a tense atmosphere in the cabin.

One passenger was heard saying, “Please be considerate. Consider yourself and the rest of us.” They asked the woman to also be considerate of those trying to make connections. According to reports, the passenger then used profanity toward flight attendants and those sitting nearby as they attempted to get her to follow the crew’s instructions.
The disruption didn’t end when the plane reached the gate. While the flight crew initially asked the passenger to depart, she allegedly refused, which required the crew to call the police. The situation escalated further when a representative announced that all passengers would need to deplane.
It was a move that understandably sparked frustration among the more than 160 people on board. One person was recorded asking, “So, we’re all supposed to listen and [she] doesn’t?”
Police identified the woman as 39-year-old Shannon Marie Harris of Tyrone, Georgia. According to court records, Harris eventually attempted to leave the aircraft with the rest of the passengers after the crew’s request, at which point she was arrested and charged with trespassing.
Beyond the initial trespassing charge, NBC6 reports that the passenger may face additional consequences related to federal aviation laws. Interfering with the duties of a flight crew member is a serious matter that carries significant weight under federal regulations.
According to information provided by Criminal Defense Lawyer, disobeying a flight attendant or crew member violates federal law if it interferes with their duties. The Federal Aviation Administration, known as the FAA, has adopted a zero-tolerance policy for unruly behavior, which has become a more frequent issue in recent years.
Federal law dictates that interfering with flight crew members, including pilots and flight attendants, can lead to a felony conviction. If a person assaults or intimidates a crew member, they could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. These laws are designed to protect the safety of the flight, covering everything from physically blocking an aisle to simply refusing to follow instructions to sit down or turn off electronic devices.
Civil penalties for such behavior can also be severe. The FAA can impose fines for interference, while cases involving assault or threats can result in fines exceeding $40,000 per incident. If a passenger finds themselves in a dispute with a crew member, the proper channels for resolution involve the airline or the U.S. Department of Transportation, rather than engaging in disruptive behavior.
Ultimately, the flight to Atlanta was delayed by about one hour. Once the situation was resolved and the passenger was removed, the aircraft was able to continue its journey without further issues.
