Evangelicals storm Connecticut ‘witch shop.’ Shopkeepers’ reaction is a lesson in kindness: ‘The conversation’s over’

They kept their cool 👏 .

A confrontation inside a New Haven, Connecticut, “witch-owned” thrift shop has gone viral on TikTok after a video surfaced showing a group of evangelical visitors entering the store and engaging staff in a tense but ultimately calm exchange over religion.

The incident took place at Witch B—h Thrift, a vintage and metaphysical store known for its inclusive retail approach and spiritual aesthetic. According to business reporting on the shop, it has become a local fixture in New Haven’s independent retail scene, blending secondhand clothing with occult and witchcraft-inspired themes.

In the video, the visitors initiate a conversation that quickly turns toward religion, specifically Christianity and Catholicism. One of the shopkeepers, who says they had Catholic schooling, responds calmly while pushing back on attempts to debate or redirect the conversation.

“I’ve done my time,” the shopkeeper says in the clip, before adding that the individuals should educate themselves on different religious beliefs. “I don’t feel like educating people, but like there are so many resources out there,” the owner says.

Storeowner: “Everybody has the right to believe in what they want”

As the exchange continues, the shopkeeper emphasizes religious pluralism and boundaries. “Everybody has the right to believe in what they want,” they say. “There are many Gods out there beyond Jesus, beyond the God that you believe in. There are other countries. Everybody has the right to practice their religion. I don’t mind if you believe in what you believe in. It doesn’t mean that anybody else has to.”

At one point, the shopkeeper declines further questioning, stating, “No. Actually no. I think that the conversation is good here. I know what you’re trying to do. I think we can cut to the chase. You are hitting a dead end here.”

The interaction becomes more pointed as the shopkeeper encourages the group to leave. “I feel like this is a little bit of you’re misreading the room. It’s okay, but like the best apology is changed behavior,” they say, a line that quickly circulated online.

“I would appreciate it if you guys moved on”

Despite the tension, the tone never escalates into hostility. The shopkeeper adds, “We should not be imposing on each other. We should be respecting each other. The conversation’s over,” they say. “So I would appreciate it if you guys moved on to the next location that you have on your list.”

The visitors ultimately leave the store without incident. The clip ends with a polite farewell exchange, including “Jesus loves you” and “Have a great day.” The shopkeepers did not publicly identify the visitors, and no law enforcement response was involved.

Social media reaction has focused heavily on the tone of the exchange, particularly the calm demeanor maintained by staff throughout. One comment read: “GIRL these boundaries embodied in love and respect is beautiful. Thank you for modelling healthy, boundaried communication so beautifully.” Another added: “Wowza! You impressed me with how amazingly calm you were during this entire interaction and their attempts to redirect. You didn’t even show their faces.” A third comment stated: “The best apology is changed behavior got me. So well put. Your tone. Your demeanor. Thank you! ✨👏🎤” Reports say the shop has seen a massive “hug” from the community, with many people visiting specifically to support the staff’s handling of the situation.
