Sandra Teague, a 58-year-old Florida woman, is facing serious child neglect charges after she allegedly abandoned her three children at a hospital. According to PEOPLE, she was arrested by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office when a 17-year-old boy arrived at the AdventHealth Palm Coast emergency room. He was with his two siblings, aged 14 and 13, and informed staff that his mother had dropped him off because she was upset.
The details regarding the state of the children are particularly jarring. The Sheriff’s office stated that “The [17-year-old] was wearing socks and no shoes and reported that his siblings had been abandoned as well.” The children explained to deputies that their mother had been extremely volatile throughout the day. The core of her anger seemed to stem from the death of one of the family’s foster dogs, for which she reportedly held the children entirely responsible.
The children told deputies that Teague told them, “This is the last straw,” and then drove them to the hospital and yelled at them to get out of the car and drove off. This wasn’t the first time the children had experienced harsh treatment, either. They recounted to officials that whenever Teague became upset, she would frequently lock them out of the house. They claimed they were forced to sleep outside as often as every other day.
It seems that she valued her pets more than her children
When deputies arrived at the residence to investigate, they were met with an environment that sounds completely uninhabitable. Investigators reported that the front door area of the home was reeking of garbage, and they found animal feces covering the floors and walls throughout the interior.
The scale of the animal hoarding was significant. Authorities executed a search warrant and discovered 44 dogs, three pigs, a cat, and a snake inside the home. Perhaps most disturbingly, they also found multiple deceased animals kept in kennels. Palm Coast Animal Control eventually removed all the animals from the property.
According to govinfo.gov, chronic child neglect is defined as a parent or caregiver’s ongoing, serious pattern of deprivation of a child’s basic physical, developmental, or emotional needs for healthy growth and development. This definition highlights that neglect often involves multiple incidents across different areas of a child’s life rather than just a single isolated event.
The situation with Teague’s children involves recurring issues like being locked out of the house and living in squalor. This fits into the framework of long-term harm to a child’s safety and well-being.
The response from law enforcement was swift, and the Florida Department of Children and Families was called to the scene to assist. Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly provided a clear statement regarding the conditions the children were subjected to, saying, “No child should ever have to live in these disgusting conditions or be treated like this.”
Following her arrest, Teague was processed at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. She is currently being held there without bond. While she is already facing three counts of child neglect, the investigation is still ongoing.
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that Teague may eventually face additional charges as they continue to dig into the circumstances surrounding the home and the treatment of the children. Until then, I hope that the children get a modicum of safety and stability.
It is incredibly insane to me that so many people can fail on such basic parenting elements. Worse, I don’t understand the parents or guardians who make the conscious decision to hurt those dependent on them. Recently, we’ve seen multiple cases of neglect.
Melissa Goodman was charged with abusing and neglecting her stepdaughter so badly that the 14-year-old looked like she was six. Then, in a more horrifying case, a father was so self-involved that when a fire broke out at home, he chose to save himself and abandoned the children in the house.
